Societal Complexity: An Empirical Test of a Typology of Societies

Linton C. Freeman; Robert F. Winch

Does the concept of societal complexity refer to a single dimension? Data have been gathered from a sample of forty-eight societies and scored according to Guttmans scalogram analysis. Six out of eight variables tested vary systematically and constitute an acceptable scale. This is empirical evidence for the relevance of societal complexity. The study demonstrates a technique for testing polar ideal types which allows the investigator to determine whether or not they are empirically based.

Courtship in College Women

Robert F. Winch

As measured, the nature of the parent-daughter relationship has little correlation with the daughters progress in courtship. Appearance, the wish to be married, the absence of career drive, and favorability of the early dating situation are correlated with courtship progress. The data are interpreted as suggesting a sex difference in personality development, and hypotheses for further study are presented.

Personality Characteristics of Engaged and Married Couples

Robert F. Winch

Although associations have previously been established between scores on personality tests and scores on marital happiness and marital adjustment indexes, the nature of the association and the direction of causation have not been systematically explored. By showing that a similar association obtains between the scores of engaged persons on personality tests and on an adjustment in engagement index, this paper indicates that the previously demonstrated relationship is not a result of the marital halo effect. The data are interpreted as providing partial evidence to support the view held by Terman that personality factors determine aptitude for marriage.
