Plasma desorption mass spectra of the three-dimensionally non-molecular material [Cd(SC6H4CH3-4)2]∞: formation of cadmium-containing cluster ions

Plasma desorption mass spectra of the cadmium compound [Cd(SC6H4CH3-4)2]∞ have been obtained in both positive- and negative-ion modes. The positive-ion mass spectra in particular provide detailed structural information on this inorganic material. Samples have been loaded by electrospraying the solution in dimethylformamide and by the nitrocellulose-substrate technique. The positive-ion mass spectra exhibit peaks corresponding in mass to clusters of the general formula [Cdx(SC7H7)2x−1]+, up to x = 8.

Crystalline Cd4(SC6H4Me-4)8 contains a three-dimensionally non-molecular zeolitic lattice of vertex-linked adamantanoid cages, while crystalline Cd8(SC6H4Br-4)16(DMF)3(DMF = dimethylformamide) contains a derived two-dimensionally non-molecular lattice with linkages interrupted by CdSAr and Cd(DMF)3 terminal co-ordination: Cd n.m.r. spectra of Cd(SC6H4X-4)2(X = H, F, Cl, Br, Me) in DMF solution indicate the existence of temperature-dependent equilibria between large and small molecular aggregates.
