The computed tomographic (CT) and ultrasound (US) appearances of 5 adrenal myelolipomas in 4 patients are reported. The component tissues of a myelolipoma determine its CT and US appearance. A myelolipoma consisting primarily of fat has a characteristic CT and US appearance. A myelolipoma also containing macroscopic quantities of nonfatty material (blood, calcium, or myeloid tissue) may have a nonspecific CT or US appearance if fat is not identified in the lesion. In equivocal cases, needle biopsy may be used to establish the diagnosis of myelolipoma.

AbstractRenal cell carcinoma was staged prospectively with computerized tomography, ultrasonography and angiography in 23 cases. Staging was correct with computerized tomography in 91 per cent of the lesions (21 of 23), with ultrasound in 70 per cent (16 of 23) and with angiography in 61 per cent (14 of 23). Computerized tomography of the abdomen is the optimal technique to stage renal cell carcinoma and to determine adjacent organ invasion, lymph node metastases and venous extension. When computerized tomography is not available ultrasonography provides a useful alternative to angiography in preoperative tumor assessment in many cases.

When faced with a patient with possible acute cholecystitis, technetium-99m-HIDA scintigraphy should be the primary diagnostic procedure performed. If scintigraphy reveals a normal gallbladder, acute cholecystitis is excluded. If the scintigram fails to visualize the gallbladder, ultrasonography is deemed advisable to exclude potential false-positive scintigrams and confirm the presence of cholelithiasis.

This presentation will focus on the recent developments in nuclear medicine that relate to diagnosis and staging in the cancer patient. The commercial availability of new Anger cameras as well as longitudinal tomographic scanning devices has improved gallium imaging significantly. This has enhanced tumor detection and resulted in better use of gallium scanning in the cancer patient.
