College Courses in Electron Microscopy

The facilities and plans for instruction in electron microscopy in representative universities are briefly described. Recommendations are presented regarding principal instrumental and specimen techniques to be taught, laboratory equipment, student supplies, and useful publications. These recommendations evolved from an inquiry among those practicing electron microscopy in academic and industrial research laboratories.

Increasing college enrollments, and the needs of both industry and the national welfare for capable, technically trained personnel emphasize the desirability of special supplemental programs for increasing the competence of high school teachers of science and mathematics. The growth of interest in summer science institutes, their financial support, and their effectiveness are discussed.
