Abstract Shape design sensitivity analysis of arches and built-up structures that contain arches is carried out in this paper. The derivation is based on distributed parameter structural design sensitivity analysis theory. Curved beam theory is used to derive shape design sensitivity information and straight beam/truss theory is used for analysis of displacement fields. Results presented show that approximation of the actual and adjoint displacement fields by straight beam-truss elements is sufficiently accurate for arches with shallow shape. For arches with high curvature, the straight beam-truss approximation leads to relatively large approximation errors. A fine finite element grid reduces error, but for good approximation many elements are needed. Shape design sensitivity analysis results for built-up structures are good, when compared to finite differences, as long as the finite element analysis is accurate.

Todays tire pressure monitoring systems comprise valve stem mounted wheel units for pressure measurement which are battery-powered. In this contribution, a novel intelligent tire system is presented which provides a wealth of functionality including tire pressure system monitoring. The main features are battery-less operation based on a transponder principle and the permanent, transparent incorporation of the electronics in the tire. Hence, there are no life-time or ecology issues as in battery-based systems, the mounting process is simpler than in valve stem systems and tire identification capabilities are provided. The paper describes the basic system functionality and the key technical parameters to start an industry-wide discussion on standardization.
