On Economic Growth: An Essay in Pure Theory. D. M. Bensusan-Butt

with dominant diagonal and their applications. His proofs are partly new and sometimes simpler than the known proofs. Michio Morishima gives sufficient conditions for the global stability of Walras-Cassel-Leontief systems. Paul A. Samuelson writes on efficient paths of capital accumulation in terms of the calculus of variations. Robert M. Solow shows how one can take account of technological progress in using a Cobb-Douglas type production function for the whole economy. He also gives some empirical results which have been derived with the help of the new theoretical approach. His main assumption is as follows: Technical properties of the means of production depend upon the time of their origin. This leads to interesting theoretical consequences. It would be desirable to integrate this new approach into the theory of growth. Some very important remarks at the end of this article are a step in this direction. H. Theil and T. Kloek investigate the important question of the effects of parameter estimates which contain errors in the use of econometric models for purposes of economic policy. They give a very instructive numerical example, which deals with the problems of economic policy in the United States, 1933-36. Hirofumi Uzawa shows how one can base the theory of rational consumers behavior upon Samuelsonss weak axiom of revealed preferences. The section on management science contains 4 articles. There are two essays on inventory problems by Herbert Scarf and Samuel Karlin and Augustus J. Fabens. David G. Kendall writes on geometric ergodicity and the theory of queues. George B. Dantzig treats the problem of nonlinear programming. The section on psychology contains 10 contributions. Jacob Marschak investigates the connection of binary choice probabilities and the existence of random utility functions. The articles by Richard C. Atkinson, C. J. Burke, Robert R. Bush, W. K. Estes, R. Duncan Luce, and Patrick Suppes are contributions to the mathematical theory of learning. The essay by Eugene Galanter and George A. Milier gives a critical treatment of this theory. The authors insist that an adequate description of human learning should start with cognitive assumptions, e.g., the human problem solving theory by Newell, Shaw, and Simon. T. W. Anderson and Herbert Solomon treat problems of the statistical analysis of psychological tests. If the editors are thinking of publishing another volume, it would be desirable to include essays on sociology and political science.
