Experimental designs for selecting the better of two quantal response functions

Robert M. Wharton

This paper presents an approach for the selection of the better of two quantal response functions. The procedure assumes that two random variables X and Y are described by logistic models, conditioned on the same continuous random variable Z, have the same but unknown scale parameter and different location parameters. The probability of correctly selecting the random variable with the largest location parameter is estimated and tabulated for several commonly used experimental designs, using computer simulation. The selection rule is based on the maximum likelihood estimators of the location parameters.

The Scholarly Book Buyer’s Decision Process: A National Survey of University Faculty

Hooman Estelami; Albert N. Greco; Robert M. Wharton

The dissemination of knowledge in every field depends on the existence of scholarly publications such as academic journals, scholarly books and periodicals. Existing research however has not examined the decision process by which scholars make their purchase decisions related to scholarly outlets. Of special interest to this paper are scholarly books, which are often defined as books with intellectual content used by academics for either research or teaching purposes. These books are common tool for the integration and dissemination of cutting-edge knowledge in various fields of study. This paper reports on a national survey of university faculty regarding the factors that influence purchases of scholarly books.

Confidence bands for the laplace distribution

R. Srinivasan; Robert M. Wharton

Based on a random sample from the Laplace population with unknown shape and scale parameters, one- and two-sided confidence bands on the entire cumulative distribution function and simultaneous confidence intervals for the interval probabilities under the distribution are constructed using Kolmogorov–Smirnov type statistics. Small sample and asymptotic percentiles of the relevant statistics are provided.
