A CNDO/S study on the electronic structure of 1,1′-binaphthyl

Richard W. Bigelow; Robert W. Anderson

Abstract CNDO/S CI calculations demonstrate that the changes in fluorescence and S n ← S 1 properties of 1,1′-binaphthyl in going from rigid to fluid solutions is consistent with a cis → trans rotation of the chromophores. A lack of significant fluorescence dependence on solvent polarity is discussed within the context of the calculations.

Laser photolysis studies of the photoinduced production of ion radicals in polymers

Uri Lachish; David J. Williams; Robert W. Anderson

Abstract N2-laser flash photolysis measurements of poly (N-vinylcarbazole) (PVCz) and N-isopropylcarbazole (NIPC) with p-dicyanobenzene (DCNB)_in dimethylformide (DMF) show an excitation intensity dependent quantum yield for for ion-radical production. The transient absorbance associated with the ion radical species together with light intensity dependent fluorescence decay curves demonstrate that excitation annihilation processes can compete effectively with ion-radical formation at high excitation intensities in this polymer.

Temperature Dependent Electron Trapping in Anthracene

K. E. Meyer; L.B. Schein; Robert W. Anderson; R.S. Narang; Andrew R. McGhie

Abstract We present data for the electron trapping lifetime measured in the c direction of anthracene over a wide range of temperatures (81–374 K) and applied electric fields (0.10–4.73 V/(μm). Over these ranges the lifetime is activated and the activation energy is independent of the field. We have considered several trapping models. Only one of these, a model consisting of a deep trap level and associated shallow “pre-trap” level, can adequately account for our data. We discuss briefly the possibility of a temperature dependent trapping cross-section.
