SummaryParry-Romberg syndrome is an uncommon self-limiting condition principally affecting the adipose tissue of the face. Six patients have undergone the microfat injection technique. The follow-up of 18 months confirms the usefulness of microlipoinjection in the treatment of the soft tissue deformity of the face.

The authors propose a combined approach for the treatment of orbito-palpebral haemangiomas. Two cases are presented and discussed. Pre-operative evaluation included coronal, axial, and sagittal CT scans as well as a selective arteriogram. These studies assisted the planning of the surgical approach. An intracranial/extracranial surgical approach was used with ocular-palpebral dissection. Pre-operative arterial embolization was helpful in controlling perioperative blood loss. Precise excision of the masses was thus accomplished and functional and aesthetic reconstruction aided by the conservation of normal anatomical structures.

The removal of disfiguring tattooed eyebrows of 21 patients by means of dermatography is discussed. The color pigments were removed using penta-monogalloyl-glucose, a tannic acid. No side effects were found. Local anesthesia was not necessary. Biopsies of five patients with inflammatory reactions to the tattooed pigments were taken before treatment. A 5-year follow-up showed that the results were lasting and cosmetically satisfactory.

SummaryProgressive hemifacial atrophy, described initially by Parry and Romberg, is reviewed in terms of etiopathogenesis and clinical features. The purpose is to clarify the variegated nature of this syndrome and to distinguish it from other forms of atrophy affecting the face, principally the soft tissues. The authors propose a new general classification of hypoplasia and atrophy of the face.

The treatment of 38 trichotillomania patients with dermatography—medical tattooing techniques—is discussed. The location was in the eyebrows. After the completion of treatment all patients stopped plucking the eyebrows. In a five-year follow-up none of the patients showed a relapse. With dermatography, no anesthetics are necessary because the pain level is generally bearable. The cosmetic and aesthetic improvement achieved by dermatography was remarkable.

The presence of a nasal hemangioma may have a severe negative effect on the personality of a child. Early surgery in the involution phase has proved to be beneficial in this respect. The treatment of a consecutive series of nine patients who had surgery shortly after they were first seen for consultation is discussed. An extended rhinotomy (L-approach) was used in four of these patients. The results were uniformly good.

Conventional surgical techniques used for the treatment of nasal deviations do not avoid recurrences, especially in inveterate forms. The primary alteration of the nasal osteocartilaginous framework would progressively increase and, therefore, could cause changes of structures initially not involved by the trauma, such as alar or upper lateral cartilage. According to our analysis, it is supposed that the septal perichondrium is capable of restoring its previous position. This happens especially in the inveterate forms of deviation and even when the septal straightening has already been done. The anatomopathological study points out the constant presence of the fibrous thickening of the perichondrium at the same level as the concave portion of septum, and this finding represents the anatomical expression of the scarring reaction after the traumatic event. The fibroperichon-drium is excised as radically as possible for the entire bilateral surface of the chondral septum. Good results by extramucosal perichondrectomy, associated with more conventional procedures of septum correction, in a series of 20 selected patients has encouraged reporting of the technique.

In bilateral cleft palate patients, abnormal obliquity and narrowness of orbits are noted on radiographs, computed tomographic scans, and magnetic resonance imaging investigations. Deformity of bony structures (increase in transverse length) is sometimes associated with malposition of eyelids, which results in a typical antimongoloid facies. Five patients were treated, and we report our series to illustrate the problem and its correction using the “mask-lift” procedure, initially described by Tessier and Krastinova.
