Abstract Renal tumors other than renal cell carcinoma rarely may invade the main renal vein and inferior vena cava. A case is reported of carcinosarcoma of the right kidney composed of transitional cell and giant cell elements with invasion into the inferior vena cava. Obstruction of the renal vein should be considered in patients with transitional cell carcinoma and an ipsilateral nonvisualized kidney on excretory urography.

Differential quantitative radionuclide renal scans have been used to confirm that early removal of staghorn calculi by anatrophic nephrolithotomy preserves renal parenchyma without significant renal damage by the surgical procedure. The 99mtechnetium diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid scan was useful in predicting recovery of function in the involved kidney, while the 131iodine orthoiodohippurate scan provided a quantitative evaluation of the effect of the surgical procedure on individual kidney function. All of 13 consecutive patients evaluated by 131iodine orthoiodohippurate renal scans had stable or improved effective renal plasma flow to the involved kidney and an unchanged or improved total excretory index 6 months after nephrolithotomy.

Sixty-three patients underwent radical cystectomy for invasive bladder carcinoma at West Virginia University Medical Center from 1961 to 1978. Survival statistics are presented and discussed in comparison with alternative modes of therapy. A brief discussion of complications is also presented.

Leukemic infiltration of the urinary tract is most common in the kidneys. Other areas are involved much less frequently. We report a case of leukemic infiltration of the penis.

Renal cell carcinoma in the pediatric population is a rare disease. A limited number of cases of renal cell carcinoma exist worldwide in the pediatric population. Reported herein is a case of a 17-year-old female who presented to an outside hospital with gross hematuria and shortness of breath. She was found to have a pulmonary embolus on computed tomography scan. After further imaging, a large renal mass with renal vein and vena cava involvement was observed. Intraoperatively, the tumor demonstrated extensive invasion of the wall of the vena cava.
