Gender effects on entrepreneurial intention: a meta‐analytical structural equation model

Inga Haus; Holger Steinmetz; Rodrigo Isidor; Rüdiger Kabst

Purpose – Although the percentage of female entrepreneurs has increased over the past several years, it is far below the level of males. Drawing on the theory of planned behaviour and role congruity theory, the purpose of this paper is to specify a model in which the relationship between gender and entrepreneurial intention (EI) is mediated by three essential motivational constructs (i.e. attitude toward starting a business, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control (PBC)).Design/methodology/approach – The study specifies and tests a meta‐analytical structural equation model. The study aggregates the results of 30 studies (n=52,367).Findings – The study reveals a higher average EI for men compared to women. However, although significant, the gender differences in EI and the motivational constructs were small and cannot sufficiently explain the substantial differences in actually starting a business. Furthermore, moderator analyses show differences in the gender‐EI relationship between Europe and t...

The influence of cultural context on the relationship between gender diversity and team performance: a meta-analysis

Matthias Schneid; Rodrigo Isidor; Chengguang Li; Rüdiger Kabst

The impact of gender diversity on team performance has become a central topic in the field of human resource management for researchers and practitioners alike. Extant research provides conflicting evidence on the relationship between gender diversity and team performance. To resolve these contradictory findings, we meta-analyze the relationship between gender diversity and two performance outcomes, namely task performance and contextual performance. Grounded in categorization-elaboration model, we simultaneously consider the positive and negative aspects of gender diversity. We further examine the effect of cultural context as a moderator on the relationship between gender diversity and team performance. Based on 71 independent samples from 68 studies published between 1996 and 2013, we find a significant negative relationship ( − 0.10) between gender diversity and contextual performance. Additionally, we find that the cultural dimensions gender egalitarianism and collectivism have significant moderating influences on the relationship between gender diversity and task performance.

Age diversity and team outcomes: a quantitative review

Matthias Schneid; Rodrigo Isidor; Holger Steinmetz; Rüdiger Kabst

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to synthesize the literature on the relationship between age diversity (AD) and the essential team outcomes (i.e. performance quality, financial performance, innovation and creativity, effectiveness, satisfaction, and turnover). Design/methodology/approach – The authors conduct a meta-analysis of the relationship between AD and team outcomes using a sample of 74 studies. Furthermore, the authors investigate the role of contextual factors (task complexity, type of performance evaluation, study setting, team size, age cohort) as moderators of the AD-team outcome relationship. Findings – The results show no significant overall relationships between AD and team outcomes, except for turnover (r=0.11, p < 0.05). Moderator analyses reveal significant albeit weak differences regarding task complexity, team size, and age cohort. Originality/value – The authors extend previous research by quantitatively reviewing the AD-team outcome relationship. By showing that AD is only rel...

The Influence of the Cultural Context on Expatriate Adjustment

Matthias Baum; Rodrigo Isidor

While the expatriate management literature has shown the importance of the cultural context for expatriate adjustment, empirical evidence on the role of cultural distance remains mixed. We corroborate the expatriate management literature by developing a conceptual rationale for different mechanisms (underestimation effect, motivation and support effects, and complexity effect) linking cultural distance and expatriate adjustment that lead to a curvilinear relationship between the two constructs. Additionally, we introduce cultural tightness and attractiveness into the expatriate management context and posit that cultural tightness and attractiveness exert a moderating influence on the effect of cultural distance on expatriate adjustment. Specifically, we theorize that tightness negatively moderates the relationship between cultural distance and expatriate adjustment while attractiveness should exert a positive moderating effect.

Linking transaction cost and social exchange theory to explain strategic alliance performance: a meta-analytic structural equation model

Rodrigo Isidor; Holger Steinmetz; Christian Schwens; Ruediger Kabst

Drawing on transaction cost economics (TCE) and social exchange theory (SET), we develop and test an integrative model of strategic alliance performance using meta-analytic structural equation modelling. Results reveal that TCEs key constructs (e.g., relationship specific investments, opportunism, and environmental uncertainty) influence SETs key constructs (e.g., trust and commitment) which in turn increase different strategic alliance performance outcomes (e.g., satisfaction, goal fulfilment, profitability, and stability). Further, our results show that the different outcome variables are distinct constructs, which measure different facets of strategic alliance performance.

A Conceptual Framework for the International Staffing of Early Internationalizers

Rodrigo Isidor; Christian Schwens; Rüdiger Kabst

Research on the internationalization of the firm is manifold. Internationalization offers the firm market opportunities that help to realize economies of scale and scope (Caves 1996), to learn from international markets (Kogut/Zander 1995), to exploit interrelations between business segments and geographic areas (Porter 1990, Hamel 1991, Hitt et al. 1997), to achieve risk diversification (Kim et al. 1989), and cost reduction (Hennart 1982, Kogut 1985, Lu/Beamish 2004). Traditionally the internationalization process of the firm unfolds in an incremental manner out of an established domestic market. According to the dominating Process Theories of Internationalization (PTI) (Johanson/Vahlne 1977, 1990), the internationalization process takes place along the establishment chain. As such, foreign market activities occur in the steps “no regular export”, “independent representative”, “sales subsidiary” and wholly-owned “production subsidiary” in the final stage (Johanson/Vahlne 1977, p. 24).
