Operating rules for multireservoir systems

Rodrigo Proença de Oliveira; Daniel P. Loucks

Multireservoir operating policies are usually defined by rules that specify either individual reservoir desired (target) storage volumes or desired (target) releases based on the time of year and the existing total storage volume in all reservoirs. This paper focuses on the use of genetic search algorithms to derive these multireservoir operating policies. The genetic algorithms use real-valued vectors containing information needed to define both system release and individual reservoir storage volume targets as functions of total storage in each of multiple within-year periods. Elitism, arithmetic crossover, mutation, and “en bloc” replacement are used in the algorithms to generate successive sets of possible operating policies. Each policy is then evaluated using simulation to compute a performance index for a given flow series. The better performing policies are then used as a basis for generating new sets of possible policies. The process of improved policy generation and evaluation is repeated until no further improvement in performance is obtained. The proposed algorithm is applied to example reservoir systems used for water supply and hydropower.

Automatic detection of landslide features with remote sensing techniques: Application to Madeira Island

The extreme rainfall event of February 20 ,2010 triggered a series of landslides and alluvium episodes with extensive life and material damages. The use of automatic detection of the landslides over satellite imagery allowed the identification and characterization of the affected areas, the mapping of the landslide features and the calculation of the displaced sediment volume. The study shows that the occurred landslides were shallow, being the basins of Ribeira Brava the most affected areas, with almost two thirds of the total identified landslide polygons.

Comparative performance analysis of climate re-analysis approaches in Angola

Sandra Pombo; Rodrigo Proença de Oliveira; André Mendes

ABSTRACT This paper examines the performance of three climate re-analysis datasets in Angola, namely the ERA-40, NCEP-r1 and JRA-55, by comparing annual and seasonal estimates of precipitation, surface air temperature and evaporation with ground observation measurements. The observational dataset describes a region poorly covered by international climate databases and it is believed that most of its data have not been used in the data assimilation procedures of the climate models. This paper therefore provides a fresh look at the performance of these climate re-analysis datasets in a vast area where distance and civil war have hindered ground monitoring efforts. The re-analysis exercises offer better temperature estimates than precipitation estimates. When offered, the evaporation estimates from all three products are very poor. The three products are able to describe the main features of the spatial distribution of average annual precipitation and temperature, but struggle to reproduce the temporal changes of these variables. The results from a set of performance criteria show that the correlation between the observed ground measurements and re-analysis estimates is poor overall and the NSE values indicate that the average measured value at each location is usually a better estimate than the re-analysis estimate.
