Study Design. Translation, cross-cultural adaptation and psychometric testing of self-report outcome measurements. Objectives. The aims of this study were to adapt the Functional Rating Index (FRI) to Brazilian- Portuguese and to test the psychometric properties of this new questionnaire and the Brazilian-Roland Morris Disability Questionnaire (RMDQ). Summary of Background Data. Self-report measures are commonly used in clinical practice and in research studies. Most existing questionnaires were developed in English and there is only 1 Brazilian-Portuguese cross-cultural adaptation of a spine outcome measure. Methods. The FRI was translated and adapted into Brazilian-Portuguese according to the Guidelines for the process of cross-cultural adaptation of self report measures. The Brazilian-Portuguese FRI and RMDQ were tested for internal consistency, reliability, ceiling and floor effects, construct validity, and responsiveness in 140 low back pain (LBP) patients. Results. A very high level of internal consistency (Cronbachs α = 0.92) and reliability [ICC = 0.95 (95% confidence interval, 0.93–0.97)] was shown for both instruments. The FRI and RMDQ were highly correlated (r = 0.80), while both the FRI and RMDQ were moderately correlated with pain at baseline (r = 0.67 and 0.55, respectively). No ceiling or floor effects were detected; however, the responsiveness of both questionnaires was quite small (RMDQ ES = 0.10 [84% confidence interval, 0.04–0.16] and FRI ES = 0.18 [84% confidence interval, 0.11–0.24]). Conclusion. The results of this study indicate that the Brazilian-Portuguese versions of the FRI and RMDQ are reliable and valid instruments for the measurement of disability in Brazilian-Portuguese-speaking patients with LBP presenting for physiotherapy treatment. Both instruments are suitable for use in clinical practice and research studies.

Análise epidemiológica de lesões no futebol de salão durante o XV Campeonato Brasileiro de Seleções Sub 20

Rodrigo Ribeiro; Leonardo Oliveira Pena Costa

Introduction: Several authors have investigated the incidence of injuries occurred in the outdoor soccer game. However, there are only few works analyzing injuries occurred in the indoor soccer game (futsal). The purpose of this study was to analyze the incidence, circumstances, and characteristics of injuries recorded in the indoor soccer during the 15 th Brazilian Sub20 Futsal Championship. Methods: Physiotherapists and doctors of every team selection participating in the 15 th Brazilian Sub20 Futsal Championship answered a questionnaire with the purpose to investigate the occurrence of injuries during the games. The answering rate was 100%. Results: 32 total injuries were recorded along 23 games, with a 1.39 injury incidence per game, or 208.6 injuries per 1,000/game. Approximately 1 to 3 injuries per game resulted in removal of players from gaming or training. Contact injuries were predominant in 65.62% (21 out of 32 injuries), and most of these injuries did not result in removal of the players. Conclusions: The present study observed that the injury incidence during the 15 th Brazilian Sub20 Futsal Championship was similar to the incidence during the Indoor Soccer tournaments, but higher than those found in the outdoor soccer tournaments, characterizing the specificity of the sports. Nevertheless, circumstances and characteristics are similar among them, mainly due to the similar demand of the sports.INTRODUCTION: Several authors have investigated the incidence of injuries occurred in the outdoor soccer game. The value of practice: A critique of interactional expertise.

Rodrigo Ribeiro; Francisco Pa Lima

Collins and Evans have proposed a ‘normative theory of expertise’ as a way to solve the ‘problem of demarcation’ in public debates involving technical matters. Their argument is that all citizens have the right to participate in the ‘political’ phases of such debates, while only three types of experts should have a voice in the ‘technical’ phases. In this article, Collins and Evans’ typology of expertise – in particular, the idea of ‘interactional expertise’ – is the focus of a detailed empirical, methodological and philosophical analysis. As a result, we reaffirm the difference between practitioners and non-practitioners, contesting the four central claims about interactional expertise – namely, that (1) the idea of interactional expertise has been proven empirically, (2) it is possible to develop interactional expertise through ‘linguistic socialization alone’, (3) the idea of interactional expertise supports the ‘the minimal embodiment thesis’ that the individual human body or, more broadly, ‘embodiment’ is not as relevant as linguistic socialization for acquiring a language and (4) interactional experts have the same linguistic fluency, understanding and judgemental abilities of practitioners within discursive settings. Instead, we argue, individuals’ abilities and understandings vary according to the ‘type of immersion’ they have experienced within a given practice and whether they bring with them another ‘perspective’. Acknowledging these differences helps with demarcation but does not solve the ‘problem of demarcation’. Every experience is perspectival and cannot handle, alone, the intertwined and complex issues found in public debates involving technical matters. The challenge, then, concerns the ways to mediate interactions between actors with distinct perspectives, experiences and abilities.

Terminating constraint set satisfiability and simplification algorithms for context-dependent overloading

Rodrigo Ribeiro; Carlos Camarão; Lucília Figueiredo

Algorithms for constraint set satisfiability and simplification of Haskell type class constraints are used during type inference in order to allow the inference of more accurate types and to detect ambiguity. Unfortunately, both constraint set satisfiability and simplification are in general undecidable, and the use of these algorithms may cause non-termination of type inference. This paper presents algorithms for these problems that terminate on any given input, based on the use of a criterion that is tested on each recursive step. The use of this criterion eliminates the need of imposing syntactic conditions on Haskell type class and instance declarations in order to guarantee termination of type inference in the presence of multi-parameter type classes, and allows program compilation without the need of compiler flags for lifting such restrictions. Undecidability of the problems implies the existence of instances for which the algorithm incorrectly reports unsatisfiability, but we are not aware of any practical example where this occurs.
