This dictionary, dealing with contemporary critical terms, has been extensively revised and up-dated.

A LATE OLD ENGLISH HANDBOOK FOR THE USE OF A CONFESSOR

In a number of eleventh Century manuscripts associated withWorcester and/or with Archbishop Wulfstan the homilist there occurs a set of confessional and penitential texts, or extracts from the set: I, a Latin Ordo Confessionis; II, a formula for confession; III, general directions for a confessor; IV, a short penitential; V, more directions for a confessor and comments on forms of penance, ending with a paragraph on concessions for the sick; VI, commutations for rieh men. The set appears, more or less complete but with the individual texts arranged in various orders, in no less than six manuscripts, and certain passages are echoed elsewhere. This distribution testifies to the importance of the work and is the justification for a modern edition, taking account of all MSS, and a brief attempt to characterize the collection and determine its origin.)
