WAGES: Wages and salaries reinforce social distinctions.

ECONOMIC FOUNDATIONS: The economy of the new Länder may be less strong than that of the old Länder but it has a higher rate of growth.

ELECTIONS: In the west, the FDP together with the Greens have become a third force. In the east, this role is played by the PDS.

WASTE: Industrial production and mass consumption have a direct impact on the type and quantity of waste produced.

THE POPULATION: In 1990 unification brought East Germany, with 17 million people, together with a West German population more then three times its size.

RICH AND POOR: Since the mid 1970s, poverty has been increasing in germany.

SAFETY NETS: The willingness of the state to support those in need is a reflection of social attitudes.

TRADE: After the USA, Germany is the largest exporter in the world. Three quarters of its exports go to other EU countries.
