Risque d’abandon scolaire, style parental et participation parentale au suivi scolaire

La presente etude vise a verifier les liens entre le risque d’abandon scolaire au secondaire, le style parental et la participation parentale au suivi scolaire. L’echantillon se compose de 810 eleves de premiere secondaire (12–13 ans). Le risque d’abandon scolaire est mesure a l’aide du questionnaire Decisions (P. Quirouette, 1988); le style parental et la participation parentale au suivi scolaire sont evalues au moyen des questionnaires de L. Steinberg, S. D. Lamborn, S. M. Dornbusch et N. Darling (1992) et J. L. Epstein, L. J. Connors et K. C. Salinas (1993), traduits et valides au Quebec par R. Deslandes (1996). Les analyses de regressions multiples permettent d’identifier deux dimensions du style parental et deux dimensions de la participation parentale au suivi scolaire qui expliquent 23 % de la variance du risque d’abandon scolaire. Les dimensions les plus significatives sont, en ordre d’importance, le soutien affectif parental, l’engagement et l’encadrement parental et la communication avec les enseignants. This study analyzes the correlation of the risk of dropping out in high school with parent- ing style and parental involvement in schooling. The study sample comprised 810 adoles- cents (12–13 years old). The risk of dropping out was assessed using the questionnaire Decisions (P. Quirouette, 1988). Parenting style and parental involvement in schooling were evaluated using questionnaires developped by L. Steinberg, S. D. Lamborn, S. M. Dornbusch, and N. Darling (1992) and by J. L. Epstein, L. J. Connors, and K.C. Salinas (1993), translated and validated in Quebec by R. Deslandes (1996). Multiple-regression analyses identified two dimensions of parenting style and two dimensions of parental involvement in schooling that together explained 23% of the variance in the risk of drop- ping out. In order of importance, the most significant dimensions are parental affective support, warmth, supervision, and communication with teachers.

Engagement of educators and parents in students’ health education in a low socioeconomic school in Quebec: A case study

Objective: This qualitative study aimed to describe how educators and parents engage with students on health issues within the context of the Healthy School Approach in a disadvantaged Quebec school. Method: Individual interviews were conducted at the school setting with both educators (n = 5) and parents (n = 5) during the school year of 2010–2011. The interview protocol was based on Hoover-Dempsey, Walker and Ice’s (2010) revised theoretical model of the involvement process and more precisely on the mechanisms of influence, modelling, reinforcement, teaching and encouragements. Results: Findings indicate that educators’ and parents’ actions tend to involve modelling and encouragements in particular, with the main emphasis on physical activity and nutrition. Educators stress the importance of grounding their health actions in school activities related to the school project, whereas parents believe that their participation as volunteers in the various health-related activities organized at school significantly helps their efforts to support their child. Results highlight the parents’ undeniable contribution to children’s health within current educational systems. Conclusion: In their conclusion, the authors put into light the importance of two challenging denominators: (1) a shared vision of health; and (2) coherent health education actions in a disadvantaged environment.

Implementing Maker Spaces to Promote Cross-Generational Sharing and Learning

In this chapter, we seek to contribute to a reflection on cross-generational sharing and learning by presenting a position paper on the potential that the implementation of maker spaces presents in formal and informal educational settings. We first discuss the main characteristics of the maker movement and illustrate some concrete activities that are taking place in Montreal and Quebec City. We then explore to which extent students build knowledge within maker spaces, acquiring knowledge, and competencies through a participatory approach with the extended members of the school community. Our conclusions highlight the great potential that maker spaces hold for the improvement of cross-generational relationships and for the foundation of learning across the lifespan.

Cette etude vise, d’une part, a examiner les perceptions des parents a l’egard de la sante a l’ecole et de leur role en matiere de promotion de la sante et, d’autre part, a identifier de quelles facons les parents s’engagent dans le deploiement de l’Approche ecoleen sante a travers les environnements scolaire et familial. Les donnees sont issues d’un questionnaire et d’un entretien de groupe. Selon les resultats, les parents se percoivent comme des acteurs cles et souhaitent plus d’activites parents / enfants reliees aux habitudes de vie. Enfin, le developpement vers une demarche de sante globale dans un contexte de collaboration ecole-famille doit se poursuivre.
