Measuring performance of Indian banks: an application Data Envelopment Analysis

Roma Mitra Debnath; Ravi Shankar

A stable and efficient banking sector is an essential precondition to increase the economic level of a country. This paper tries to model and evaluate the efficiency of 50 Indian banks by using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). DEA is capable of handling multiple inputs and outputs and the sources of inefficiency can be analysed and quantified for every evaluated unit. The aim of this paper is to estimate and compare efficiency of the banking sector in India. The analysis is supposed to verify or reject the hypothesis whether the banking sector fulfils its intermediation function sufficiently to compete with the global players. The results are insightful to the financial policy planner as it identifies priority areas for different banks, which can improve the performance. This paper evaluates the performance of Banking Sectors in India.

A hybrid fuzzy AHP/DEA method is proposed for telecom service providers.Ranking the parameters using Fuzzy AHP for benchmarking of service providers.Benchmarking & efficiency analysis using DEA to improve their performance. The purpose of this research paper is to develop a framework to understand the consumers preference affecting variables and consumers perception choice in telecommunication service providers in India. The present study use a hybrid approach to access the relative efficiency based on fuzzy AHP and DEA model. The fuzzy AHP is used to determine weights of the consumers preference as criteria and DEA method is used to identify the inefficient service providers in terms of efficiency. Findings of the study suggest that the most preferred value that determines consumers preference by mobile subscribers is network parameters, followed by low tariff scheme. Our results also show that technical efficiency and technical progress indicator are the main factors of resources allocation of Indian telecom industry. Most of the work on this hybrid FAHP-DEA is dedicated to either vendor selection, facility layout problem or supplier selection. A study of this kind, in the context of mobile subscribers preference is an original contribution to the literature of Indian telecom sector. This research paper identifies the different variables and then a model is prepared for benchmarking of the mobile service providers in India. Based on the efficiency analysis decision makers can develop strategy to improve their performance according to efficient service providers as their role model. The other advantage of this hybrid AHP/DEA method is that by using inputs and outputs data we can derive mathematically all pair wise comparisons in fuzzy AHP and DEA models and there is no any form of subjective analysis engaged within the methodology.

Efficiency in the Indian iron and steel industry – an application of data envelopment analysis

Roma Mitra Debnath; V.J. Sebastian

Purpose - – The purpose of this paper applies to Indian steel manufacturing industries to evaluate the technical and scale efficiency (SE). Design/methodology/approach - – Data envelopment analysis (DEA) has been employed to calculate the relative efficiency of the steel manufacturing units. The selection criteria for the inclusion of a steel manufacturing unit in the analysis has been annual income of more than 50 crores and units manufacturing pig iron, steel and sponge iron. Within the DEA framework, the output-oriented model with constant returns to scale and variable returns to scale were studied. Four input variables, namely, gross fixed assets, total energy cost, total number of employees and currents assets were considered. Among the output variables, the four variables considered are income, sales, PBIT and PAT. Findings - – The result of the efficiency scores have been categorized into three parts. The pure technical efficiency represents local efficiency and the reason of inefficiency is due to inefficient operations. Technical efficiency indicates that the respective decision-making units are globally efficient in case the efficiency is 100 per cent. The SE explains that the inefficiency is caused by disadvantageous conditions. As the result shows, that public sector undertaking (PSUs) are operating under disadvantageous conditions as compared to private manufacturing units. One of the possible reasons of location disadvantage condition is manufacturing units for PSUs are scattered throughout India. Some of the units are located in such places where, the raw material, supply chain could be difficult. It has been found that 45 per cent of the private manufacturing units are technically as well as scale inefficient units. Practical implications - – The result of the study would benefit the steel industry to develop a performance benchmarking as steel companies must be profitable in the long term to ensure sustainable achievements. Originality/value - – This is an original study to apply DEA to get insights on productivity efficiency of the steel manufacturing units in India. Though the manufacturing units were selected on the basis of annual income, the analysis of productivity does not reflect any impact of income on the efficiency of the manufacturing firms.

Assessing performance of management institutions

Roma Mitra Debnath; Ravi Shankar

Purpose – Utilizing data envelopment analysis (DEA), this paper seeks to examine the performance of 20 Indian B‐Schools, separating their profitability and marketability. The technique allows one to identify those management institutions which are able to utilize their resources in a most efficient way such that the overall goals of the organization are satisfied and total outcome maximized. If a management institution means to be effective in developing professionals who are going to be competent leaders and managers, then it would be useful to know the performance of the management institutes. However, measuring the performance of management institutes has received very little attention compared with other industries because it is difficult to measure its output.Design/methodology/approach – A DEA model is used to evaluate the relative efficiency of a group of decision‐making units (DMUs) in their use of multiple inputs to produce multiple outputs where the form of production is neither known nor specif...
