Effect of the stirrer clearance on particle suspension in agitated vessels

The influence of the stirrer clearance C on the hydrodynamics of agitated vesels, and particularly on the minimum stirrer velocity for the complete suspension of solid particles, NSUPjSUPs, may be considerable; the subject is of practical interest because when the complete suspension of the solid particles is just achieved, satisfactory mass and heat transfer rates can be observed even if the power spent is rather low. Morphological characterisation of MSW landfills

Abstract Landfill characterisation has been carried out by analyses of waste samples collected from different depths in the municipal landfill of Torino. The main result has been that landfill drilling to collect samples can provide useful information about landfill morphology: e.g., inside a landfill, water lenses can form and their origin can strongly influence organic matter degradation rates and, therefore, biogas generation and composition. In addition, the investigation suggests that landfill behaviour and biogas production can be predicted in a more reliable way if very simple chemico-physical analyses of collected samples are performed.

Continuous radial filtration in the purification of oily water

Abstract A new type of continuous sand filter with cross flow of sand (downward flow) and of oily water to be filtered (radial flow) has been tried in order to achieve high separation efficiencies with rather high continuous rates of oily water. Many experimental runs have been carried out with different types and rates of sand and with different water rates and inlet concentration. The results seem to demonstrate that continuous radial filtration offers an encouraging means for the treatment of oil-polluted water.
