Urbanisation alters the flow of energy through stream food webs

Anthropogenic changes in the aquatic environment can influence macroinvertebrate communities, interfering with species richness and diversity. Few studies have investigated the effect of urbanisation in streams using a food web approach. The aim of this study was to describe the food webs of aquatic macroinvertebrates in streams located in urban and preserved areas of the Atlantic Rainforest domain. Sampling was conducted in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, at 10 urban and 10 preserved streams during the dry season (August–September) of 2012. The streams were characterised with respect to their environmental conditions. Macroinvertebrates were sorted and identified in the laboratory and gut contents were examined. Trophic relationships were plotted in consumer–resource food webs and network properties were used to compare the two sets of streams. Food webs in urban streams had higher linkage density and connectance, but consumers had fewer items in their guts, which may indicate reduced flow of energy and more unstable food webs. The base of the food webs in each land‐use type were also quite different, with higher amounts of plant detritus in preserved streams and fine detritus in urban streams. This study shows that preserved areas offer better conditions for the development of macroinvertebrates, resulting in more stable trophic structures when compared with environments under higher anthropogenic influence.

Seasonal variation in black fly (Diptera: Simuliidae) taxocenoses from the Brazilian Savannah (Tocantins, Brazil)

ABSTRACT: We investigated the spatial and temporal distribution of blackfly larvae on a mesohabitat scale atfour different breeding sites in the Brazilian savannah “Cerrado.”A total of 2,385 larvae of 12 different species were collected, and three of the sampling sites revealedspecies richness and diversity peaks in April. A principal components analysis was performed to reduce abiotic data into a smaller set of independent variables, such as precipitation and river size, and subsequent linear regressions showed that Simulium subpallidum was positively correlated with precipitation.This species, along with S. nigrimanum, was negatively correlated withriver size, whereasS. perflavum was negatively correlated with precipitation. Beta diversity was negatively correlated withprecipitation, and black fly taxocenoses were markedly different between wet and dry seasons, as shown through nonmetric multidimensional scaling, suggesting that precipitation playsa major role in structuring these communities, probably because of enhanced drift and the dendritic nature of lotic metacommunities.

Macroinvertebrate diversity loss in urban streams from tropical forests

The increase of human activities in recent years has significantly interfered and affected aquatic ecosystems. In this present study, we investigate the effects of urbanization in the community structure of aquatic macroinvertebrates from Atlantic Forest streams. The sampling was conducted in the mountainous region of the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 10 urban and 10 preserved streams during the dry season (August–September) of 2012. The streams were characterized for its environmental integrity conditions and physico-chemical properties of water. The macroinvertebrates were sampled on rocky substrates with a kicknet. A total of 5370 individuals were collected from all streams and were distributed among Ephemeroptera, Odonata, Plecoptera, Hemiptera, Megaloptera, Coleoptera, Trichoptera, Lepidoptera, and Diptera. In urban sites, all those orders were found, except Megaloptera, while only Mollusca was not found in preserved streams. We performed a non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) analysis that separated two groups distributed among sites in urban communities and another group outside this area. The dominance was significantly higher at urban sites, while the α diversity and equitability were greater in preserved sites. A canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) was also performed, indicating that most taxa associated with high values of the Habitat Integrity Index (HII) and a few genus of the order Diptera with the high values of ammonia, total nitrogen, associated to streams in urban sites. Urban and preserved streams differ by physical-chemical variables and aquatic macroinvertebrates. In urban streams, there is most dominance, while α diversity and equitability are higher in preserved streams.

Efeitos in vivo de extratos de Abacateiro (Persea gratissima) e Mulungu (Erythrina mulungu) sobre atividades de enzimas citocromo P450 hepáticas de rato.

O uso de plantas com finalidades terapeuticas e uma das mais antigas praticas medicinais da humanidade, sendo baseado em evidencias historicas ou pessoais. Verifica-se uma tendencia a generalizacao do consumo de plantas medicinais e de seus derivados, devida a crenca de que tudo que e natural nao faz mal a saude. As plantas medicinais sao muito usadas como alternativa terapeutica, entretanto, sabe-se que muitos de seus componentes podem alterar as concentracoes plasmaticas de farmacos alopaticos atraves da inibicao ou inducao de enzimas do citocromo P450. Considerando o descrito acima, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os efeitos in vivo de extratos brutos de plantas medicinais sobre as atividades das enzimas 7-etoxicumarina O-desetilase (ECOD), 7-etoxirresorufina O-desetilase (EROD), 7-metoxirresorufina O -desmetilase (MROD) e 7-pentoxirresorufina O -despentilase (PROD) hepaticas de ratos Wistar. Assim, ratos machos foram tratados com extratos de folha de abacateiro ( Persea gratissima) e de casca de mulungu ( Erythrina mulungu ). Apos receberem os extratos por meio de gavagem por quatro dias consecutivos, os animais foram submetidos a eutanasia, sendo as atividades das enzimas determinadas por espectrofluorimetria em microssoma hepatico. N ossos resultados mostram que a administracao de extrato de abacateiro promoveu um aumento significativo das atividades da ECOD, MROD e PROD, enquanto a atividade de EROD sofreu uma reducao significativa. A administracao de extrato de casca de mulungu promoveu reducao significativa das atividades da ECOD, MROD e PROD, enquanto a atividade da EROD nao sofreu alteracao significativa. Diante do exposto, indicamos a necessidade de maior conhecimento dos efeitos de extratos de plantas sobre as atividades destas enzimas, de maneira a promover o uso racional e seguro de medicamentos.

INTERAÇÕES ECOLÓGICAS E DOENÇAS TRANSMISSÍVEIS

Um profissional que transita entre as areas da Ecologia e da Epidemiologia pode espantar-se, num primeiro momento, com a aparente contradicao entre os objetivos dessas disciplinas. A ecologia visa compreender a biodiversidade e os processos naturais dos sistemas ecologicos e, em ultima instância, conserva-los, como e claro na Biologia da Conservacao, disciplina derivada. A epidemiologia, por sua vez, visa em ultima instância a melhoria da saude humana e de uma selecao de animais e plantas de interesse, eventualmente por meio da eliminacao de formas de vida consideradas perniciosas. Controle, eliminacao e erradicacao sao conceitos e praticas comuns na epidemiologia. Esta abordagem, as vezes chamada de militarista, resultou em grandes campanhas de exterminio que levaram a extincao o parasita responsavel pela variola, em 1980, e a eliminacao, no Brasil, do vetor da Febre Amarela urbana, em 1955 (Lourenco-de-Oliveira 2008). Somando-se as bem sucedidas campanhas de vacinacao contra sarampo, polio e outras doencas, estas iniciativas levaram a afirmacoes contundentes como a do porta-voz da Saude Publica dos Estados Unidos que em 1967, declarou que o problema das doencas transmissiveis era “uma pagina virada” (Passos 1999).Atualmente, ha um consenso de que se foi muito otimista aquela altura. As poucas doencas que conseguimos efetivamente eliminar ou controlar - que eram (e sao) certamente terriveis - sao caracterizadas por ciclos de transmissao relativamente simples, sem vetores ou hospedeiros intermediarios, alem de apresentarem pouca variabilidade genetica. As estrategias classicas de controle, no entanto, dificilmente alcancam o exito esperado em doencas de ciclos mais complexos, nos quais estao envolvidos multiplos hospedeiros, vetores ou mesmo multiplos parasitas. Na fisica, e reconhecida a dificuldade de se prever a trajetoria de mais de tres corpos em movimento. Pode-se imaginar o desafio que constitui prever e controlar a trajetoria de um sistema biologico composto por multiplos agentes, que, diferentemente do sistema fisico, sao ainda por cima mais do que capazes - sao fadados, a adaptar-se e evoluir.A Ecologia desenvolveu ao longo de sua historia um amplo arcabouco teorico e metodologico para estudar e compreender a interacao entre individuos da mesma ou de especies diferentes dentro de um ecossistema, mas apesar da ubiquidade e diversidade do parasitismo no mundo natural, apenas nas ultimas decadas a ecologia de populacoes e de comunidades de parasitas passou a ser valorizada como objeto de estudo por ecologos, sendo ate entao tema abordado quase exclusivamente no âmbito da Parasitologia (Poulin 1998). A falta de comunicacao entre parasitologistas e ecologos limitou e atrasou a troca
