PURPOSE It was to describe and compare the preference of nulliparous and primiparous women for a particular mode of delivery and to determine whether the previous experience of childbirth influences the delivery process. METHODS We conducted a prospective cross-sectional study. One-hundred interviews were held with 56 nulliparous and 44 primiparous women using previously prepared questionnaires. The quantitative and categorical data were evaluated by the chi-square or Fishers Exact Test. RESULTS 60.7% of nulliparous women and 70.5% of primiparous women reported to prefer vaginal delivery. When analyzing the answers about receiving sufficient information about the type of delivery, the presence or absence of influence on the choice of route of delivery and the preferred route of delivery by the partner, there were no statistically significant differences between the two groups. The level of significance used for the tests was 0.05. CONCLUSIONS This study permitted us to conclude that the previous experience of delivery does not influence the expectation of the delivery process or the choice for a specific mode of delivery. When choosing the route of delivery, women seek to ensure the health of mother and neonate, as well as to avoid the process of pain and suffering.

fetal oxygenation caused by oxytocin produced uterine contractions are presented in Table 1. In all but one patient (TL), in whom the initial L-S ratio was 1.5, the L-S for all others was 1.1 to 1.3. Evaluation of the newborns: Although none of the 15 newborns had RDS, four newborns had short episodes of tachypnea. Three had hyperbilirubinemia. All had good tissue oxygenation as expressed in the arterial pH values ranging between 7.35 and 7.45. All had high values of Hgb, which ranged between 22.0 g and 29.0 g per deciliter, and peripheral venous Hct above 65 percent. To rule out hemoconcentration due to dehydration of the mother, all received oral liquids, including milk, within 2 to 4 hours after birth. All newborns were discharged home with their mothers.

Methods: Sealed unidentified envelopes containing questionnaires were sent to 100 health professionals who work at the obstetrics department of public hospital in São Paulo, Brazil. Results: The mean age, time since graduation, and time working with obstetrics were 39, 12, and 10 years, respectively. Fortyseven percent of the subjects stated that they are unaware of the Brazilian law on induced abortion and 8% incorrectly stated that the restriction to induced abortion is total. When they were asked about the need of knowing the circumstances of the abortion in order to provide medical care for women, 85% of them said that it was important, even though only 37% recognize that such information can interfere with the choice of treatment. Regarding the legality of induced abortion in Brazil, 91% of the subjects think it should be legal in cases of rape; 47.5% in cases of diagnosed non-lethal fetal anomaly; 91% in cases of diagnosed lethal fetal malformation; 41.2% in cases when the child is not wanted, and 92.7% in cases of death risk during pregnancy or labor. Conclusion: The professionals are unaware about the law on abortion, reflecting the prejudice and difficulty to address the subject, which is considered taboo in Brazil. Health professionals have a conservative attitude, accepting induced abortion better in cases of lethal fetal malformation, rape, and death risk for the woman.
