Two hundred chinldren from nursery schools in Lages, southern Brazil, were associated as to parasitic ibfections. The overall prevalence of helminths and protozoa was 70.5%, affecting 61.4% of male and 74.5% of female children. The most prevalent parasites were Ascaris lumbricoides (35%), Giardia lambia (14%) e Trichuris trichiura (13%).

Abstract Rangelia vitalii is a piroplasmid that causes canine rangeliosis, a severe hemorrhagic disease of domestic dogs in South America. We report about R. vitalii infecting a pampas fox (Lycalopex gymnocercus). The fox, which developed a fatal illness, was also infected by Hepatozoon canis and Capillaria hepatica.

Abstract Capillaria hepatica was detected by histopathologic diagnosis in two cougars that were shot in April 2008 in Painel, Santa Catarina, Brazil. Macroscopic analysis of their livers revealed the presence of diffuse granulomas, and the histopathologic analysis indicated the presence of C. hepatica eggs, surrounded by mononuclear inflammatory cell infiltrate, small foci of necrosis, and mild-to-moderate fibrosis. This is the first report of C. hepatica in cougars (Puma concolor) in Brazil.

Cryptosporidium spp is a common intestinal pathogen of animals and humans. It may have an important economic impact on farms and cause potentially zoonotic infections. Fecal specimens were collected from 331 domestic animals (81 beef cattle, 50 sheep, 100 pigs and 100 dogs) and checked for the presence of Cryptosporidium oocysts by way of Ziehl Neelsen and auramine staining methods. An overall positivity rate of 7.5% (25/331) was found, with rates of 10% (10/100) among the dogs and 18.5% (15/81) among the beef cattle. The feces of sheep and pigs tested negative. In beef cattle, 15 and 12 positive samples were detected by the auramine and Ziehl Neelsen staining techniques, respectively, with no statistically significant difference between the two methods. In dogs, the same number of positive samples was found by both techniques.

Objective: To evaluate the contamination of lettuces (Lactuca saliva) with parasites of Public Health peculiar interest sold in Lages, Santa Catarina. Materials and Methods: A nonprobabilitic intentional sampling method was used, in which eight supermarkets and two public markets were selected according to their scope of activity and sales volume for the town. The 122 samples obtained from eight supermarkets and from two open-air markets were analyzed by the techniques of spontaneous sedimentation (Lutz), centrifugation and fluctuation in zinc sulphate (Faust), centrifugation and fluctuation in sucrose solution (Sheather) and modified Ziehl Neelsen coloration. Results: The total parasitism rate was 88.5% (108/122), 77% (94/122) in the supermarkets samples and 11.5% (14/122) in the open-air markets samples. The Lutz technique has detected 46.7% (57/122) infected lettuces; Sheather and Faust technique identified 31.1% (38/122) and 10.6% (13/122) of lettuces infected with eggs and/or oocysts of parasites, respectively. The Eimeria, Giardia e Entamoeba were the most prevalent genders. Conclusions: The analyzed samples presented low hygienic standards, showing that more intense sanitary inspection is needed during all stages of vegetable productive process.

SUMMARY Giardia duodenalis is an enteric parasite that has distinct genetic groups. Human infections are mainly caused by assemblages A and B, although sporadic infections by assemblages C and D have also been reported. Animals can be infected by a wide range of assemblages (A to H). The aim of this study is to identify the assemblages and sub-assemblages of G. duodenalis with zoonotic features in fecal samples of school-aged children, and in dogs that coexist in the same households in Lages, Santa Catarina, Brazil. Fecal samples of 91 children and 108 dogs were obtained and G. duodenalis cysts were detected in samples from 11 (12.08%) children and 10 (9.25%) dogs. DNA extracted from the 21 positive samples was analyzed by PCR-RFLP, using the gdh gene. Results showed the presence of sub-assemblages AI (2/11), AII (4/11), BIII (2/11), and BIV(3/11) among children and AI (5/10) and BIV(3/10) in dogs, with zoonotic characteristics, and the carnivore specific assemblage C (2/10). G. duodenalis was found to infect both children and dogs living in the same household, with the same sub-assemblage (BIV) indicating that pet dogs are a potential risk of transmission of G. duodenalis to humans.

This study aims to report the incidence of Calodium hepaticum among dogs and cats, pets or stray animals, captured by the Zoonosis Control Center (CCZ) in Lages, Santa Catarina, Brazil. Fecal samples from 108 pet dogs and eight pet cats, and from 357 stray dogs and 97 stray cats, captured by CCZ, were analyzed within the period from July 2010 to November 2012. Coproparasitological exams were performed by techniques of sedimentation, centrifuge-flotation, and simple flotation. Among 465 fecal samples from dogs and 105 from cats, the overall spurious infections for C. hepaticum eggs were 1.05%. For dogs, this positivity was 0.43% and for cats it was 3.81%. The two positive dogs were stray and out of the four cats, three were stray and one was a pet. Although the occurrence of C. hepaticum eggs was low, these data reveal the existence of infected rodents, especially in public places, since, out of the six infected animals, five (83.33%) were stray. These results are discussed and analyzed with an emphasis on the risk to public health.

Objetivo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar a prevalencia de giardiase e a relacao entre a infeccao em criancas e caes do mesmo domicilio, de seis bairros da periferia de Lages, Santa Catarina. Materiais e Metodos: O estudo foi transversal, com amostragem de 105 criancas e 105 caes do mesmo domicilio. As criancas que participaram da pesquisa, com idade entre zero e doze anos, foram atendidas em postos de saude do Programa de Equipes de Saude da Familia (ESF) de seis bairros perifericos, no periodo de julho a novembro de 2005. As amostras fecais foram processadas atraves da tecnica de centrifugo-flutuacao com sulfato de zinco. Os dados foram analisados atraves do teste Qui-Quadrado de Pearson (χ2) com o nivel de significância de 5%. Resultados: A prevalencia de giardiase foi de 20% (21) para as criancas e de 18% (19) para os caes. A concordância de exames positivos entre criancas e caes foi de 18% (χ2 = 10,86 e p=0,00098). Na relacao entre idades das criancas (χ2 = 2,64 e p=0,7552) e por regressao logistica (p=0,684) nao se altera a proporcao de criancas positivas/negativas com a idade. Conforme o valor de odds ratio, a chance de uma crianca com cao positivo apresentar resultado positivo e 5,5 vezes maior que a crianca com cao negativo. Conclusao: A prevalencia de Giardia foi alta em criancas e caes da populacao estudada. Caes devem ser rotineiramente avaliados por exames parasitologicos e tratados para eliminar a possibilidade de infectar outros caes ou membros da familia.

Objetivo: Este trabalho contribui para a caracterizacao do perfil epidemiologico de acidentes com araneideos de interesse em saude publica, na populacao de Curitibanos, Santa Catarina. Materiais e Metodos: O estudo e descritivo e exploratorio. Foi utilizada documentacao sobre acidentes com aranhas ocorridos entre janeiro de 2006 a julho de 2008, registrados nas fichas do Sistema de Informacao de Agravos de Notificacao (SINAN) da Vigilância Epidemiologica. Os dados sao tabulados em frequencia absoluta e relativa. Resultados: O total de acidentes araneideos foi de 231, com 82 (35,5%) em 2006, 102 (44,2%) em 2007 e 47 (20,3%) em 2008, dos quais 138 (59,8%) ocorreram com mulheres. Houve o aumento dos acidentes com criancas, 9,7% em 2006, 14,7% em 2007 e 25,5% em 2008. Conclusao: Os acidentes com aranhas de interesse em saude publica aumentaram nos ultimos anos, confirmando a importância de iniciativas por parte dos orgaos publicos em promover programas de prevencao.
