The discovery of the use of balloon angioplasty was accomplished by Dotter in dy1963, when he recanalized an occluded right iliac artery by passing a percutaneously introduced catheter retrograde through the occlusion to perform an abdominal aortogram in a patient with renal artery stenosis.1–5 On September 16th, 1977, the first percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) in a human was performed by Gruentzig, in Zurich. Gruentzig et al. followed this first report with the first 50 coronary angioplasties in 1979.6–10
