The Portuguese mainland, located in western Iberia, represents a key area for understanding the evolution of the European Atlantic margin during the Cenozoic and the establishment of relations with the Mediterranean, in particular through the transition area between those two oceans which is well documented in the Algarve region.

Interpretation of recent structures in an area of cryptokarst evolution—neotectonic versus subsidence genesis

Abstract The study area (Algarve) is located near the Eurasia–Africa plate boundary, experiencing significant tectonic and seismic activities. Regional geology is characterised by the presence of Mesozoic and Miocene carbonate rocks which are affected by karst phenomena. This karst is covered by terrigenous sediments of Upper Miocene and Pliocene–Pleistocene age. In the study area, the Pliocene–Quaternary cover deposits are affected by a large number of mesoscopic structures, including joints, faults, and a few folds, which indicate neotectonic activity. However, these sediments also present similar structures that result from underground karst evolution, raising the need to differentiate the neotectonic structures from those of non-tectonic origin. In fact, a variety of ductile, semi-brittle and brittle structures develop in the sediments that fill up the karst wells, controlled by different rheological behaviour of the cover deposits, various strain rates associated with sudden collapse or progressive sinking, and the variable shape of the karst pits walls. The structure’s geometry, geographical dispersion and directional scattering were used as criteria to infer a non-tectonic genesis. It is discussed whether some karst related structures may be controlled by the contemporary tectonic stress field and consequently are interpreted in the regional geodynamical framework.

Incorporating Descriptive Metadata into Seismic Source Zone Models for Seismic-Hazard Assessment: A Case Study of the Azores-West Iberian Region

In probabilistic seismic-hazard analysis (PSHA), seismic source zone (SSZ) models are widely used to account for the contribution to the hazard from earth- quakes not directly correlated with geological structures. Notwithstanding the impact of SSZ models in PSHA, the theoretical framework underlying SSZ models and the criteria used to delineate the SSZs are seldom explicitly stated and suitably docu- mented. In this paper, we propose a methodological framework to develop and docu- ment SSZ models, which includes (1) an assessment of the appropriate scale and degree of stationarity, (2) an assessment of seismicity catalog completeness-related issues, and (3) an evaluation and credibility ranking of physical criteria used to delin- eate the boundaries of the SSZs. We also emphasize the need for SSZ models to be supported by a comprehensive set of metadata documenting both the unique character- istics of each SSZ and the criteria used to delineate its boundaries. This procedure ensures that the uncertainties in the model can be properly addressed in the PSHA and that the model can be easily updated whenever new data are available. The pro- posed methodology is illustrated using the SSZ model developed for the Azores-West Iberian region in the context of the Seismic Hazard Harmonization in Europe project (project SHARE) and some of the most relevant SSZs are discussed in detail. Exposure to hazards is expected to increase in Europe, due to rapid population growth in urban areas and the escalation of urbanization throughout many countries. In the framework of the European Geological Surveys (EGS), the Earth Observation and Geohazards Expert Group (EOEG) has carried out a survey based enquiry regarding the integration of geohazards (earthquakes, volcanoes, landslides, ground subsidence, floods and others) into urban and land-use planning. Responses from 19 European countries and 5 regions reveal heterogeneous policies across national borders. 17% of the countries have not yet implemented any legal measures to integrate geohazards into urban and land-use plans and half of the participating countries have no official methodological guides to construct geohazard maps. Additionally, there is a scarce knowledge about real social impacts of geohazards and resulting disasters in many of the countries, although they have a significant impact on their national economies. This overview stresses the need for a common legislative framework and homogenization of the national legislations as well as mutual guidelines which adopt the principles applicable to the management of geohazards and explain the process to be followed in the production of hazard documentation. This is especially relevant in case of landslide and subsidence hazards; although those are of great importance in Europe, there are no common guidelines and practices similar to Directive 2007/60/EC on the assessment and management of flood risk. Based on their expertise, EuroGeoSurveys (EGS) have the potential to coordinate this activity in European geohazard guidelines and to promote the interaction among stakeholders.

El grupo no es conocido en el resto del Devonico y reaparece en el Pensilvaniense con algunasformas del genero Hustedia. En este trabajo se propone un nuevo taxon de la Familia Retziidae,Argovejia n.gen., de la parte final del Emsiense superior de Asturias y Leon, constituido por su especietipo,A. talenti n.sp. y, quizas, por las formas del Emsiense superior del Macizo Armoricano (Francia)Retzia haidingeri var. armoricana y Retzia haidingeri var. dichotoma.The Ronda Depression is filled by Neogene sediments on the boundary between Subbeticreliefs, with NE-SW structural trends, and the frontal Subbetic Chaotic Complexes. The folding stylein the Subbetic Units of Western Betics is strongly controlled by the rheology of the rocks: thick andmassive beds of Jurassic limestones over Triassic marls and gypsum with plastic behaviour. Main deformationstructures in the sedimentary infill of the Ronda depression are simultaneous box folds withNNE-SSW and WNW-ESE trends that only affect its southwestern part. This distribution of folds isa consequence of the inherited fold trend that affected the basement during Early Burdigalian age.
