Evaluation of the potential use of m-learning in higher education

Ruben Picek; Matija Grčić

Rapid development of mobile technology and the increasing availability of wireless mobile devices in everyday life have created new acronym known as mobile learning (m-learning) which has emerged as a potential educational environment to support learning and make significant contributions as extension of e-learning. Taking into account the strengths and weaknesses of using m-learning and key factors for successful adoption of mobile learning that are analyzed through this article, the paper focuses on the evaluation of the potential use of m-learning. For this purpose, a research was conducted on the population of students who, during the whole higher education, where using e-learning as an obligatory element of education at University of Zagreb. Results of our research shows that students, as mobile users, are not yet ready to become a mobile learners.

User interface modeling within application system development

Vjeran Strahonja; Ruben Picek

A well-designed user interface, nowadays exclusively graphical, is one of the key factors determining the applications appeal to the user. GUI modeling should be a part of the overall process of application system development. The aim of this article is to show different methodological approaches to the GUI modeling. Nowadays, UML is a widely used standard for object-oriented modeling software in the software industry. The paper investigates whether it is possible to successfully model GUI by using UML and suggests a way in which this can be achieved. by using some UML extensions without disrupting the standardization.

The Ontologically based Model for the Integration of the IoT and Cloud ERP Services.

Darko Andročec; Ruben Picek; Marko Mijač

On-premise and Cloud ERP systems have become a backbone of almost all businesses. Another recent trend currently in focus of both industry and academy is Internet of Things. The integration of Cloud ERP and the Internet of Things (IoT) should be looked as a new shift in business effectiveness and will have a great momentum in future. In this work, we propose the ontologically based model for the integration of the IoT and Cloud ERP systems by using Semantic Web services. To semantically annotate things as services, we plan to use recently published W3C’s SSN and SOSA ontologies. Furthermore, we plan to extend mentioned ontologies to include classification and descriptions of Cloud ERP APIs. Our integration model proposes usage of Semantic web services and AI planning technique to semi-automatically compose IoT and Cloud ERP services.

Multipoint Web Real-Time Communication

Ruben Picek; Samuel Picek

One of the most significant current challenges for the Web is enabling human real time communication via voice and video known as a Real Time Communication (RTC). Many web applications with this functionality need some kind of plugins, downloads or installs. This paper introduces a novel approach on how to integrate real-time multimedia communication into web browser as the most natural way. After analyzing problems and addressing open issues of browser RTC, paper focuses on one identify issue—multiple peer connections, presenting potential network topologies with their pros and cons in terms of implementation, cost and quality. Our research is then focus on implementing one multipoint network topologies which enables videoconferencing. Proposed solution is based on using a WebRTC standard as work in progress with the biggest positive echo in research and developers in that field [12].
