Aspectos neurológicos e eletrencefalográficos da toxoplasmose

Adhemar M. Fiorillo; Jorge Armbrust Figueiredo; Rubens Moura Ribeiro

Thirty patients with chorioretinitis and positive Sabin-Feldman dye test were studied concerning their neurologic aspects. There were no striking abnormalities in neurologic examination and skull X-rays. Otherwise electroencephalographic studies indicate that 73.4% of the 30 patients showed some degree of abnormalities. The most frequent changes consisted of paroxysmal sharp waves patterns, diffuse desorganization changes and as-symetrical brain waves activities. It should be emphasized the high incidence of electroencephalographic abnormalities in patients with toxoplasmosis.

Evolução neurológica e eletrencefalográfica em crianças após meningencefalites purulentas

Terezinha C.B. Montelli; Maria Valeriana Leme de Moura Ribeiro; Rubens Moura Ribeiro; Mário Carneiro Leão Ribeiro

Twenty children with meningitis diagnosed in the Hospital das Clinicas da Faculdade de Medicina de Ribeirao Preto between 1963 and 1967 were available for prospective study; each was submited to neurological and electroencephalographyc examination, D.Q. (Gesell) and I.Q. (Raven) tests. Patients were followed from 6 months to 3 years after the acute phase of the disease. There is statistically significant difference between the D.Q. of post-meningitic children and the D.Q. of non meningitic controls of same social class and ages, when the onset of illness was before 30 months of age. No statistically significant correlation was found between the D.Q. and the patients lenght of hospitalization or the first cerebrospinal fluid protein level. There is a possibility that significant correlation betwenn the D.Q. and age at onset of illness may be observed by studying a larger number of patients. No statistically significant difference was found between the l.Q. of postmeningitic children and controls when the onset of illness was after age 4.Twenty children with meningitis diagnosed in the Hospital das Clinicas da Faculdade de Medicina de Ribeirão Preto between 1963 and 1967 were available for prospective study; each was submitted to neurological and electroencephalographic examination, D.Q. Epilepsias focais na infância: correlação eletro-clínica

Rubens Moura Ribeiro

The electroencephalographic findings in 37 children with convulsive disorders were analysed in order to correlate the different clinical manifestations with paroxistic patterns. The results have showed that the bioeletrical patterns of paroxistic activity did not present morphological differences is to give basis for an electro-clinical correlation. One of the main characteristics of focal epileptic discharges were its inconstant clinical manifestations, probably related to the cerebral linkage with homo and contro lateral cerebral hemispheres.

Alterações eletrencefalográficas relacionadas a deficiências nutritivas

Valeriana Moura Ribeiro; Rubens Moura Ribeiro; T. Braga Montelli; Edgard Rolando

The EEG changes in a group of 20 children with nutritional disorders are reported. The results suggest a significant difference in the EEG of patients with undernutrition and those with protein-caloric deficiency. These alterations correspond to the incidence of diffuse cerebral involvement and or discharges of an epileptic focal activity. The relatively high incidence of focal discharges may be explained on the basis of a very low epileptiform threshold of the cerebral cortex in children with nutritional disease.

Atividade eletrencefalográfica paroxística no primeiro ano de vida de pacientes epiléticos

Rubens Moura Ribeiro

Valeriana Moura Ribeiro; Rubens Moura Ribeiro; Jorge Armbrust-Figeiredo

Clinical observations of 6 children with acute cerebellar ataxia and respective laboratorial data are reported. Considerations are made in order to support the hypothesis of involving virus. The evolution of the disorder was a nonfatal one and the patients regained normal cerebellar function within a period of 6 to 60 days.

The electroencephalogram during spontaneous night sleep in epileptic patients

Rubens Moura Ribeiro; Michel Pierre Lison; Jorge Armbrust-Figueiredo

The sleep sistem results of the activity of two components: a descending component originated in the limbic structures, and an ascending system involving the bulbopontine structures which receives projections from the spinal cord components. Although the neocortex is not necessary for sleep mechanisms, it plays a very important role in sleep. Therefore, during the sleep state there is no significant quantitative difference in brain activity, but qualitative changes are recorded in EEG of epileptics patients during all night sleep.

Significado do eletrencefalograma no diagnóstico de crise convulsiva única em crianças

Rubens Moura Ribeiro; Jorge Armbrust-Figueiredo; Valeriana Moura Ribeiro

The authors studied the EEG of 20 children with history of a single epileptic seizure, in order to establish a presumptive pathological factor in the central nervous system. In this series, 13 patients (65%) had abnormal tracings, and 7 (35%) had normal EEG records. The most frequent abnormality found was a focal change, recorded in 12 patients, while the diffuse type was found in just one. Abnormal tracings, either at rest or during overventilation, were most frequently seen in 8 patients which had recurrent seizures, registered in a three years follow-up.
