New directions in geostatistics

Traditionally, the variogram function has been the geostatisticians tool of choice for modelling the correlation structure of spatially dependent observations. While the use of the variogram does not explicitly depend on distributional assumptions, it is required to be conditionally negative definite, which is commonly achieved by restriction to rather simplistic parametric models. In this paper, we will give an overview of some of the more recent non-parametric alternatives that have been proposed in order to avoid the inherent subjectivity of this approach, followed by a short excursion on the use of both parametric and non-parametric models under the assumption of Gaussianity.

Robustness in Time Series: Robust Frequency Domain Analysis

Robustness in time series analysis is an important issue. A motivation for robust frequency domain analysis can be taken from medical application: Short-term heart rate variability recordings are usually analyzed in the frequency domain. The heart rate variability is assessed by estimating the spectral density function of the tachogram series. It is well known that classical spectral density estimates are prone to outlying observations, hence, robustness is an issue. The presented multi-step procedure based on robust filtering is insensitive to outliers, and therefore provides fully automated signal processing which will facilitate reliable and reproducible heart rate variability analysis with minimal operator input. Moreover, it can also be used to identify and mark outlying observations.

Unter lokalem Schatzen (im Gegensatz zum globalen) versteht man das Schatzen des Mittelwertes einer regionalisierten Variablen in einem begrenzten Bereich, der relativ klein zu einer stationaren Zone einer Lagerstatte ist. Wir wollen nur das Problem des lokalen Schatzens streifen, wobei allerdings nur gepruft wird, wie gross der Mittelwert (mit seiner statistischen Genauigkeit) der betrachteten Variablen ist. Wenn die Variable die Menge oder den Gehalt eines bestimmten Minerals darstellt, wird allerdings nichts uber die abbaufahige Menge ausgesagt.
