Ultrathin layer sensing based on hybrid coupler with short-range surface plasmon polariton and dielectric waveguide

Ruiyuan Wan; Fang Liu; Yidong Huang

A vertical coupler composed of short range surface plasmon polariton waveguide and dielectric waveguide is studied theoretically and experimentally. The short range surface plasmon polariton mode is excited efficiently by the dielectric waveguide mode within tens of microns. Meanwhile, based on the hybrid coupler, a highly compact polarizer and a high performance sensor for ultra-thin layer sensing could be achieved.

Vertical coupling between short range surface plasmon polariton mode and dielectric waveguide mode

Ruiyuan Wan; Fang Liu; Xuan Tang; Yidong Huang; Jiangde Peng

Coupling performance between a short range surface plasmon polariton (SRSPP) mode and a conventional dielectric waveguide mode is demonstrated numerically. Simulation results show that the coupling length, as short as tens of microns, can be realized because the field of SRSPP extremely concentrates to the metal surface. SRSPP-based hybrid coupler provides not only an approach to realize highly compact functional devices, such as the TE-pass polarizer with high performance, but also an integratable route for efficiently exciting SRSPP mode, which is very useful in the SRSPP-based biosensor or SRSPP-assisted emission enhancement devices.

Refractive index dependence of the coupling characteristics between long-range surface-plasmon-polariton and dielectric waveguide modes

Fang Liu; Ruiyuan Wan; Yidong Huang; Jiangde Peng

The coupling characteristics of a hybrid coupler comprised of a long-range surface-plasmon-polariton (LRSPP) waveguide and a dielectric waveguide is analyzed with different detecting layers. Calculation results show that the coupling strength between the LRSPP mode and the dielectric-waveguide mode is rather sensitive to the refractive index of the detecting layer. This is promising to realize an integrated refractive index sensor with high resolution better than 4 x 10(-7) refractive index units or a modulator with rather low driving power and insert loss.

Extremely high efficient coupling between long range surface plasmon polariton and dielectric waveguide mode

Fang Liu; Ruiyuan Wan; Yunxiang Li; Yidong Huang; Yoshikatsu Miura; Dai Ohnishi; Jiangde Peng

To connect the surface plasmon polariton (SPP) based devices with the conventional dielectric devices is a significant issue for the further development of SPP and related applications. In this paper, extremely high efficient coupling (>99%) between long range SPP (LRSPP) waveguide mode and TM mode of dielectric waveguide has been demonstrated from a hybrid coupler, which composed of an Au (LRSPP) waveguide and a SiN (dielectric) waveguide. Based on this hybrid coupler, a polarization splitter with pure TM mode output from one arm and TE mode output from the other arm with high TE/TM extinction ratio has been realized.

Hybrid Coupling Between Long-Range Surface Plasmon Polariton Mode and Dielectric Waveguide Mode

Fang Liu; Yunxiang Li; Ruiyuan Wan; Yidong Huang; Xue Feng; Wei Zhang

In this paper, the hybrid coupling between long-range surface plasmon polariton (LRSPP) waveguide mode and dielectric waveguide mode has been studied theoretically and experimentally in detail by considering its dependence on the structure parameters and wavelength. It is demonstrated that extremely high coupling efficiency (>;99%) has been achieved for TM polarization, while no coupling could happen for TE polarization between these two kinds of waveguides. Based on this hybrid coupler, a polarization splitter with pure TM-mode output from one arm and TE-mode output from the other arm with high TE/TM extinction ratio has been realized. Additionally, this kind of coupling between different waveguides is very significant for providing an effective approach to connect the LRSPP-based devices with the conventional dielectric devices.

Hybrid Three-Arm Coupler Consisted of Long Range Surface Plasmon Polariton and Dielectric Waveguides

Fang Liu; Ruiyuan Wan; Yi Rao; Yuxin Zheng; Yidong Huang; Wei Zhang; Jiangde Peng

The hybrid three-arm coupler, which consists of the middle long range surface plasmon polariton (LRSPP) waveguide and two outside conventional dielectric waveguides, is proposed and analyzed numerically with finite element method. The characteristics, including coupling length, coupling loss, extinction ratio and frequency dependence, are discussed in detail with different structure parameters. Compared with the two-arm hybrid coupler, the coupling loss of the three-arm hybrid coupler based devices can be reduced, especially with wider middle LRSPP waveguide. Extra transmission loss on the metal strip can be avoided because of the lossless input and output arms. Furthermore, different from conventional three-arm dielectric coupler, we find that the three-arm hybrid coupler with asymmetric structure can reach a much higher extinction ratio by introducing a middle arm offset. Since the middle arm can only transfer the TM mode from one dielectric arm to the other one within the TM mode coupling length, this structure is promising for realizing integrated polarization splitter or other functional devices.

Coupling between dielectric waveguide mode and long range surface plasmon polariton waveguide mode

Yunxiang Li; Fang Liu; Boyu Fan; Ruiyuan Wan; Yidong Huang

Coupling between long range surface plasmon polariton (LRSPP) waveguide mode and dielectric waveguide (DW) mode has been studied theoretically and experimentally. It is demonstrated that the fundamental and second-order TM-polarized mode of dielectric waveguide could couple with LRSPP mode efficiently, respectively.
