20.4: Distinguished Paper: Optimizing the Brightness of Reflective Displays in Mobile Applications

Ion Bita; Hamid Tavakoli; Evgeni Yuriy Poliakov; Kebin Li; Thomas Gerald Fiske; Jennifer Gille; Russel Allyn Martin

Reflective display brightness is studied in mobile devices as a function of relevant ambient conditions, supplemental frontlight illumination, and display reflectance properties. Results for varying scattering properties in specular modulator-based displays such as mirasol®, as well as combinations of ambient and internal frontlight illumination conditions for optimizing the user experience across various lighting environments are presented.

A mirasol display uses optical interference based MEMS pixels with inherent hysteresis and is therefore passively addressable with a near zero power hold state. This paper describes methods of addressing such a display including a method providing low power and fast addressing. The correlation between pixel optical state and capacitance allows automated tuning and invisible adjustment of the drive voltages during operation. We further describe display drive circuit architecture showing the IC configuration for a mirasol display.

Optimized diffusers for reflective mirasol displays: experience from metrology characterization

Evgeni Yuriy Poliakov; Russel Allyn Martin; Ion Bita; Matthew B. Sampsell

Optical component differentiation (diffusers and light processing elements) between reflective displays based on Interferometric Modulation (IMOD) and typical transmissive (LCD) displays is discussed. We characterize optimized diffusers for a front light of reflective displays and present the key differentiation data with important metrology tools to monitor the image quality. Drawing on our experience, we outline guidance going forward.
