In these three papers the body build of infants during health and disease is described quantitatively. This is done by comparison of ratios of various external dimensions to the total body length. In the first paper the technique for measuring the external dimensions of the body in infants is described and various sources of error discussed. In the second paper general empirical formulae for the relationship between various external dimensions and total body length in healthy infants are developed. By comparing two groups of infants from different social environments, it is shown that environment may influence body build. In the third paper the results obtained in the second paper for healthy infants are used for comparison with sick infants. Various differences in the body build of infants with acute intestinal intoxication, tetany and eczema are described.

Summary 1. The palatal dimensions were measured from plaster casts in 428 infants under one year (305 males, 123 females), and means and standard deviations calculated by certain subdivisions of age. 2. The palate during infancy is relatively broad and flat, and the dental sacs are usually plainly outlined. 3. The palatal dimensions are poorly correlated with each other and with other body dimensions. 4. During the first year the breadth-height index of the palate remains unchanged. The palatal height becomes relatively greater, and the plane of maximum breadth moves posteriorly.

Abstract This study was undertaken to determine the influence of season of the year on the weight loss and the occurrence of fever in newborns. The data were obtained from the records of several thousand infants born at Bellevue Hospital over a period of years ∗ ∗These studies were made possible through the courtesy and cooperation of Dr. Frederick W. Rice and Dr. Hervey C. Williamson, to whom we wish to express our sincere appreciation..
