Attempts to conceptualize and capture the subtleties and nuances of race and racism continue unabated in sociology, the social sciences and the humanities. That this is so speaks volumes regarding the myth and the metaphysics of race in contemporary social life. We continue to probe into the often murky, and uncharted, waters of racial explorations because our knowledge of race and racial matters is seemingly never sufficient to assure us that we know all we need to know to understand the dimensions of race in order to navigate unscathed through troublesome racial waters that often threaten to engulf us during periods of crises. Theories of race and racism are often helpful during these periods, and just as in mainstream sociology various theoretical models have been proffered, each asserting a claim to represent societal reality, theories of race and racism are constructed to affirm or refute one or more perspectives on society with respect to race and racial issues and how, and in what circumstances, the theories depict or reflect social reality. A secondary, but important, issue concerns the place and role of theory in the logic of race and theories of racism. This review constitutes a dual critique in that it critiques one race theoretical model, systemic racism theory, which critiques another theoretical model, race formation theory (RFT). It is, therefore, a critique within a critique; to adequately critique and understand the underlying assumptions of systemic racism theory and its critique of race formation theory, it was imperative to understand the logic and the arguments used in its evaluation. Crucial to the evaluation of both theories is the issue of the manner in which theories and particular Ethnic and Racial Studies, 2013 Vol. 36, No. 6, 982 988, http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/01419870.2013.758867
