Brittleness is the weakest point of ceramics when they are used as structural component such as a diesel engine or a gas turbine. One of the ways to improve the toughness of ceramics is the “fiber-reinforcement”. Recent studies have revealed the potentiality of ceramic composite as an advanced material. The fibers used in the FRC (Fiber Reinforced Ceramics) can either sustain the applied stress or absorb the fracture energy through being pulled out and deflecting crack propagation.
