Influence of the textural anisotropy of laminated and overconsolidated cohesive soils on their strength parameters with an example from the “Krakowiec clays”

SummaryDetailed analysis of the three dimensional characteristics of the clays forming the capping of the sulphur deposits in the northern zone of the Carpathian Foredeep area (southern Poland) was undertaken with the purpose of comprehensive evaluation of the mechanical characteristics of the soils. On the grounds of examination of uniaxial, triaxial compression and direct tension and calculating the value of anisotropy coefficients the studied clays can be included among the R∥ > R⊥ type of anisotropy. Coefficients of strength anisotropy for the above-mentioned kinds of strength are: Ac1=1.0 − 1.6; Aτ1=1.0 − 1.3, and Ar=5 − 6, respectively. The results obtained are significant enough that anisotropy characteristics should be allowed as a supplementary criterion in classification of cohesive soils during engineering geological evaluation of strength characteristics.RésumeL’auteur a entrepris une analyse détaillée des caractéristiques tropiques des argiles qui forment la couverture des gisements de soufre dans la zone nord de l’avant-fosse carpathique (Sud de la Pologne): il se propose d’évaluer les caractéristiques mécaniques de ces argiles. D’après les résultats des essais de compression uniaxiale et triaxiale, et de traction directe, le calcul des coefficients d’anisotropie conduit à ranger ces argiles dans le type d’anisotropie R∥ > R⊥. Les coefficients d’anisotropie de résistance pour les types de résistance mentionnés ci-dessus sont respectivement: Ac1=1,0 − 1,6; Aτ1=1,0 − 1,3 et Ar=5 − 6. Les résultats obtenus sont assez significatifs pour que les caractéristiques d’anisotropie soient admises comme un critère supplémentaire pour la classification des sols cohérents lors d’une évaluation géotechnique des caractéristiques de résistance.
