Abstract On the basis of generalized integral equations, the adsorption from multicomponent ideal mixtures on heterogeneous solid surfaces has been discussed. Equations describing multicomponent liquid adsorption systems have been derived by assuming that (i) the adsorption data are measured by preserving constancy of the chosen ratios of mole fractions of the components in the bulk phase, and (ii) the heterogeneity parameters characterizing the adsorption of selected binary liquid mixtures are approximately equal. The equations were tested for three adsorption systems with ternary bulk phase.

Abstract The adsorption equilibria of binary solutions of benzene-aliphatic alcohols on silica gel have been studied at 298°K. Surface layer capacities have been calculated on the basis of the theory of adsorption from solutions on heterogeneous solid surfaces. Taking into account the molecular areas occupied by the components in the adsorbed phase the possibility of the formation of adsorption multilayer has been tested.

An equation for multilayer adsorption from multicomponent liquid mixtures on solid surfaces1 has been examined. For this purpose experimental adsorption data for four alcohols from benzene/n-heptane mixture on silica gel have been measured. Average number of the adsorbed layers, heterogeneity parameter and capacity of the surface phase have been evaluated by using the equation mentioned above.

The adsorption of chlorobenzene, nitrobenzene, and aniline from binary and ternary solutions in benzene and n-heptane on silica gel has been studied. It has been found out that the different structures of the surface phase correspond to the systems investigated. The obtained adsorption data are inconsistent with the monolayer model of the surface phase. The marked dependence of the surface phase structure on the solvent character is demonstrated. Bilayer model of the surface phase gives a good representation of the experimental data for prevailing number of systems. The multilayer adsorption of nitrobenzene from n-heptane is observed. The adsorption data are analyzed in terms of the various adsorbate-adsorbate and adsorbate-adsorbent interactions involved.

Abstract The modification of the porosity of commercial silica gels in sodium silicate solutions was investigated. The influence of the presence of preadsorbed substances on the effect of modifications was tested. The pore size distributions, total pore volumes and specific surface areas were determined by using nitrogen method. The same silica samples were investigated also using SAXS technique.

Abstract Total pore volumes for carbon adsorbents with various porosity were estimated by wetting in saturated liquid mixture: methanol+n-heptane. The obtained results are compared with results derived from adsorption data of nitrogen and mercury intrusion data. Moreover, for the components forming binary mixtures of limited miscibility used in wetting experiments, the adsorption isotherms were measured. The correlation between adsorption and wetting data is discussed.
