A biostratigraphic approach to the mid. Cretaceous transgressive sequence of the Central Polish Uplands

Abstract The mid-Cretaceous transgressive sequence exposed throughout the Central Polish Uplands ranges from the Middle Albian Hoplites (Isohoplites) eodentatus Subzone through the Upper Turonian Inoceramus costellatus Zone. The extent of the sequence, which is clastic and shallow marine in origin and developed in marginal parts of the Central European Basin, was efficiently controlled by the topography of the inundated landmass built of diverse Upper Jurassic limestone-bearing series. The key fauna, although accumulated (or preserved) patchily, permits the recognition of the majority of the standard biozones and the duration of dynamic events (non-deposition and/or reworking) acting when this highly fossiliferous sequence was formed. The three inoceramid associations are indicated to be useful as an additional tool for the biostratigraphic subdivision of the Middle and Upper Albian depositional succession.
