hepatitis, but S100b elevation did not correlate with prognosis (6). In this study, we found that serum S100b increased significantly both in the HE model and in patients with fulminant hepatitis without a significant increase in brain oedema, and S100b elevation did not correlate with the prognosis. These results suggest that S100b elevation reflects an earlier stage of intracerebral changes in fulminant hepatitis patients, but does not reflect the prognosis. Serum S100b is a sensitive marker for detection of intracerebral changes due to HE in fulminant hepatitis. S100b elevation might be useful in predicting the onset of fulminant hepatitis earlier.
