Tools and techniques for creative design

S. Joy Mountford

Publisher Summary This chapter discusses tools and techniques for creative interface design. The science and art of computer interface design is a relatively young discipline within a world of more mature design traditions. There are few success stories for interface designers to learn from, compared with traditional disciplines such as mathematics and biology. There are even fewer principles that can help predict the behavior of clients, the users. This chapter examines the emerging discipline of interface design in terms of established disciplines, the present state of the art, and techniques for generating new ideas. It also examines the areas of traditional animation, theater, architecture, industrial design, and information display for techniques and approaches that can be of use to human–computer interface designers.

When TVs are computers are TVs (panel)

S. Joy Mountford; Peter Mitchell; Pat O'Hara; Joe Sparks; Max Whitby

This panel brings together experts from TV production with those in the computer multimedia business. They will discuss what is likely to happen when the two media coexist. An exciting opportunity exists in merging the strengths of both media together synergistically to create pervasive and powerful Interactive Television.

Constructing new interface frameworks

S. Joy Mountford

The design frameworks used successfully in the past by the interface community are largely becoming outmoded. Given current trends toward more personal, portable, media-based products the CHI community needs to revise their design frameworks to help shape a new cycle of interaction design. This talk will use media-based examples to show how the past has been influenced and present some new interface frameworks to help guide future interface design directions.

Is HCI education getting a passing grade from industry

Gary Perlman; Arye R. Ephrath; Thomas T. Hewett; John Long; S. Joy Mountford; Jenny Preece

ACM SIGCHI is expending more and more effort on HCI education, funding a variety of projects, including a curriculum report, and IFIP working group, and a survey of programs. Is SKK!HI directing its resources wisely and effectively? Who are the consumers of HCI education, and who are their employers? What should be the direction of HCI edueation in the 90’s? Panelists from industry and academia will “face oft” to debate what industry wants, needs, and is getting tkom HCI education.

Retrospective on the MCC Human Interface Laboratory

Bill Curtis; Roy Kuntz; James D. Hollan; S. Joy Mountford; George Collier

On July 27, 1990 MCC’S senior management in consultation with the participating companies in MCC’S Advanced Computer Technology Program elected to terminate MCC’s Human Interface Laboratory. This decision ended a six and one–half year effort to build a large, integrated, multidisciplinary research program on user interface technology. The Lab produced numerous prototype technologies, many described in CHI conference proceedings. Nevertheless, its struggle to integrate the research disciplines, involve the participating companies, and survive changes in the structure of research funding provide a microcosm of difficult issues facing other user interface research programs.
