The fuzzy logic (FL) model to determine the radiation shielding properties of concretes containing barite in the ratio of 0%, 50%, 60%, 70%, 100%, and different water-to-cement ratio (w/c) have been developed. For training of the networks in the model, w/c and barite ratio were input, while the photon attenuation coefficient was output. The FL results were compared with experimental results and correlation between experiment and FL was compared with the correlation between experiment and calculation (XCOM). It was found that the correlation between FL and experiment was better than the correlation between XCOM and experiment.

Radiation has been existed since from the beginning of the universe due to the long half-life of the radionuclides. Technological development can produce an extra radiation to environment. Both natural and man made radiation is called background radiation and it is important to be protected from this radiation. There are three main ways to be protected, namely: time, distance and shielding. Although lead is a standard radiation shielding material, concrete is one of the main materials used in construction building construction. Besides there are different ways to test radiation shielding properties of materials, in this study an alternative way has been proposed. Here the mass attenuation coefficients (@m/@r) of three different types of concretes and lead have been estimated by processing imaged roentgen film. The obtained results were compared with the calculation obtained using XCOM.

The total linear attenuation coefficients micro (cm(-1)) have been obtained using the XCOM program at photon energies of 1 keV to 1 GeV for six different natural marbles produced in different places in Turkey. The individual contribution of photon interaction processes to the total linear attenuation coefficients for marble has been investigated. The calculated results were also compared with the measurements. The results obtained for marble were also compared with concrete.
