The paper presents a near-field antenna measurements solution using a fiber-optic techniques to improve phase measurements accuracy. Main problem in near-field antenna measurements is phase distortions from changes of cable geometry during the measurements. Measurement solution has been proposed, which allows to illuminate phase errors and consequently to enhance measurement accuracy comparing with conventional technique.

We present a comprehensive study of delay-line optoelectronic oscillators based on the numerical nonlinear time-varying model that takes into account additive and multiplicative noise sources as well as time evolution of the oscillation signal envelope and frequency. The theoretical analysis of oscillation conditions and design considerations is presented for the multi-loop all-optical gain optoelectronic oscillator.

The photovaractors for microwave photonic application were studied. The photovaractors were fabricated as a planar p-i-n or metal-semiconductor-metal (MSM) photodiodes placed in a pigtailed fiber optical module. The study of S11 parameters in the frequency range up to 3 GHz under illumination has shown that capacitances of p-i-n and MSM photodiodes strongly depend on the optical power. The capacitance variation of the photo-varactor diode under illumination is discussed.

Optical control of microwave circuits using photodiode junction capacitance variation due to optical illumination has some advantages such as simplicity and wide possibilities in application, high tuning range, accuracy, and speed. We have proposed to call as photovaractor the device which capacitance changes under illumination and which is used for optical control of microwave circuits. The numerical one-dimensional drift-diffusion model of the photovaractor based on the InP/InGaAs/InGaAsP heterostructure which is taking into account influence of the external electric circuit and parasitic elements was used to calculate the junction capacitance change under illumination. The experimental results and theoretical study of the photovaractor in the frequency range up to 3 GHz are presented.

A new type of semiconductor optoelectronic device, which is called as photovaractor, was used in a self-bias mode of operation to obtain an optically-variable impedance. This approach allowed designing an optically-switched microwave band-pass filter. The use of the photovaractor in the microwave structure was investigated. The measurements of the photovaractor, the idea of the self-bias mode, and the simulations of the filter have been presented.

This paper provides a review of various methods of optical control of microwave circuits by using p-i-n photodiodes. Theoretical and experimental studies have been carried out to investigate the effect of optical radiation on the capacitance and resistance of a p-i-n photodiode at low and high frequencies. Methods are discussed to increase the capacitance ratio and quality factor of a p-i-n photodiode operating as a varactor to implement optical control of microwave circuit.

In this paper, we present both theoretical and experimental analysis of erbium-doped fiber amplifier for delay-line optoelectronic oscillator. Theoretical investigation of erbium-doped fiber amplifier is performed by means of numerical model based on two-level approximation of active medium. The erbium-doped fiber amplifier design optimized for delay-line optoelectronic oscillator is demonstrated. The experimental study of phase noise and gain of the erbium-doped fiber amplifier is provided.
