Preparation of alumina–silica–nickel nanocomposite by in situ reduction through sol–gel route

A Bhattacharyya; P.C. Chakraborti; S Mukherjee; M.K. Mitra; G. C. Das

Abstract Ceramic based composites with dispersion of nano sized metal/metal carbide particles have generated wide technological interest for their improved mechanical properties — hardness, fracture strength as well as fracture toughness, superior electrical properties and magnetic properties. In the present investigation alumina–silica gels have been prepared along with nickel chloride and dextrose distributed in the nanometric pores of the gel. The gels are prepared with different molar proportions of alumina and silica containing 5 wt% of nickel chloride and 50 wt% excess dextrose. During heat treatment at a temperature of 9008C for half an hour in nitrogen atmosphere, nickel chloride is reduced to metallic nickel by in situ generated hydrogen in the silica–alumina matrix. X-ray analyses indicate that no nickel chloride reduction is possible upto 50 mol% silica in alumina–silica matrix. Beyond this range, higher the silica content, higher is the reduction of nickel chloride. The presence of metallic nickel has been substantiated further by SAD analysis. Particle size analysis based on X-ray diffraction as well as transmission electron micrograph shows the presence of nickel particles of size ,20 nm distributed in the alumina–silica nanocomposite.

Correlation of structure and hardness of rf magnetron sputtered silicon carbonitride films

A S Bhattacharyya; Suman K Mishra; S Mukherjee

Ternary nanocomposite silicon carbonitride (SiCN) ceramic coatings have shown potential for wear resistance, oxidation resistance, hardness, tunable band gap, and chemical inertness applications. A systematic investigation on the deposition of SiCN nanocomposite coatings by sputtering under varying deposition conditions such as chamber pressure, substrate temperature by structural, nanoindentation, and microstructural studies of optimized condition has been presented. Significant role of different deposition parameter on the mechanical and structural properties were observed. The structural characterizations of the coatings were carried out using Fourier transformed infra red (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and field emission scanning electron microscope. An increase in argon-nitrogen pressure in the range of 1–5 Pa led to lowering of particle size and surface smoothening and growth of hard phases of β-C3N4 and β-Si3N4. An increase in substrate temperature from room tempe...

Optimization of process parameters for synthesis of silica–Ni nanocomposite by design of experiment

A K Pramanick; M.K. Mitra; S Mukherjee; G. C. Das; B Duari

The optimum combination of experimental variable, temperature, time of heat treatment under nitrogen atmosphere and amount of Ni-salt was delineated to find out the maximum yield of nanophase Ni in the silica gel matrix. The size of Ni in the silica gel was found to be 34 and 45 nm for the two chosen compositions, respectively. A statistically adequate regression equation, within 95% confidence limit was developed by carrying out a set of active experiments within the framework of design of experiment. The regression equation is found to indicate the beneficial role of temperature and time of heat treatment.
