THE DEVELOPMENT OF A SCALE OF PARENTAL PUNITIVENESS TOWARD AGGRESSION.

Ralph Epstein; S. S. Komorita

A parental punitiveness scale, PPS, was developed in order to measure childrens perceptions of parental discipline toward aggression. The scale consists of 45 items which measure parental punitiveness toward physical, verbal, and indirect aggression toward parents, teachers, siblings, peers, and inanimate objects. The procedures employed in developing the scale are specified. Reliability, defined in terms of internal consistency, is .93 and .92 for the father and mother versions, respectively. Construct validation of the PPS was attempted by correlating it with generalized social distance. The obtained curvilinaar relationship between the PPS and social distance was interpreted in terms of the power theory of identification.
