The gastric transitional zones are the areas where Helicobacter treatment fails. Results of a treatment trial using the Sydney strain

S. Veldhuyzen van Zanten; V. Leung; Jani O'Rourke; Adrian Lee

Background: Little is known as to the reasons for treatment failure in H. pylori infections. We reasoned that the transitional zones between antrum and body, and cardia and body mucosae could be possible sanctuary sites. This hypothesis was tested in the Sydney strain mouse model of H. pylori infection. Method: Groups of C57BL/6 mice (N=30) infected with H. pylori (SS1) were treated for 7 days with nine different antimicrobial regimens. 20 mice in each group were sacrificed 24 hours after the conclusion of therapy. Colonization was mapped in the different region of the stomach using a four point scoring scale. The 10 remaining animals were assayed four weeks after treatment. Results: Animals infected Colonisation levels 1 day days post treatment post treatment 1 28 An t rum T/Z Bed T/Z Card
