The properties of hexakis(3-O-acetyl-2,6-di-O-pentyl)-α-cyclodextrin as a chiral stationary phase for capillary gas chromatography are described. For the first time the enantiomers of a series of different lactones are separated and their order of elution is assigned. Moreover, the enantiomers of trifluoroacetylated aldols and amino alcohols, the cyclic carbonates of 1,2-diols, 1,3-diols, O-alkylated glycerols, and some chiral pharmaceuticals are also separated on the new chiral phase. The modified α-cyclodextrin is stable above 200°C.

Abstract Pentylated cyclomaltohexaose (α-cyclodextrin) can be used as a chiral stationary phase for capillary g.l.c. in the range 40° to > 200°. Strong enantioselective molecular interactions are observed towards trifluoroacetylated carbohydrates, methyl glycosides, 1,4- and 1,5-anhydroalditols, polyols, and polyhydroxy acid methyl esters. Base-line resolution of enantiomers is achieved after only a few minutes.

Abstract Enantioselective capillary gas chromatography was used to separate the isopropylurethane derivatives of α-hydroxyketones (acyloins) and of cyanohydrins. The investigation of acyloin samples with defined enantiomeric composition proved that derivatization proceeds without racemization.

Hydrophobic derivatives of cyclodextrins are perfectly suited as chiral stationary phases for capillary gas chromatography. Per-penty-lated and partially pentylated and acetylated α- and β- cyclodextrins can be used to separate the enantiomers of a great variety of chiral molecules, thus providing a powerful tool for stereochemical analysis of natural compounds, flavour constituents, pheromones, pharmaceuticals and products from enantioselective chemical reactions.
