Abstract In this paper the stresses in a thin cylinder of arbitary length subjected to a symmetrical uniform band of pressure have been analysed using the theory of beams resting on an elastic foundation. The distribution of longitudinal and circumferential stresses in the cylinder wall have been discussed for various parameters of the cylinder. Limits for simulating a finite cylinder as an infinite cylinder have been obtained.

Abstract An analysis has been presented to calculate the stresses and deformations in the cylinder for both the axisymmetric and axiasymmetric cases of flow past a stationary circular cylinder by adopting a numerical technique. The cylinder has been considered to be a thick cylinder under plane strain loading conditions. The pressure distribution on the cylinder surface has been approximated by Fourier series. The solution has been obtained by using Airys stress function approach. It has been observed that the values for maximum and minimum stresses and deformations are quite remote from those of the values for a cylinder having uniform pressure.

Abstract An analysis has been presented to calculate the stresses and deformations in a cylinder, due to flow of ideal fluid past a stationary circular cylinder, by adopting a numerical technique. The cylinder has been considered to be a thick specimen under plane strain loading conditions. The pressure distribution on the cylinder surface has been approximated by Fourier series. The solution has been obtained by using Airys stress function approach. It has been observed that the values for maximum and minimum stresses and deformations are quite remote from those of the values for a cylinder having uniform pressure.

Abstract An analysis has been presented to calculate the stresses and deformations in the cylinder due to flow past a stationary circular cylinder by adopting a numerical technique. The flow has been considered at Reynolds number 3.32 × 105 and the cylinder has been considered to be a thick cylinder under plane strain loading conditions. The pressure distribution on the cylinder surface has been approximated by Fourier series. The solution has been obtained by using Airys stress function approach. It has been observed that the values for maximum and minimum stresses and deformations are quite remote from those for a cylinder having uniform pressure.

Abstract In this paper theoretical and experimental investigations have been carried out to determine the effect of an asymmetrical V-shaped notch on the load carrying capacity of eccentrically loaded columns. The depth of the notch was kept constant whereas the notch angle, notch root radius; eccentricity of loading and length of the column was varied. It has been concluded that an asymmetrically placed V-notch decreases the load carrying capacity of the column. The load carrying capacity is not affected appreciably upto a notch angle of approx. 90°, but beyond 90° it increases. The load carrying capacity of the column also increases as the notch root radius increases but it decreases as the eccentricity of load and slenderness ratio increase.
