OBJECTIVE: To analyze the predictors of burnout syndrome presented by nurses from the mobile prehospital emergency services. METHODS: A descriptive, exploratory, quantitative study with 38 nurses. A structured questionnaire was used, along with the Maslach Burnout Inventory in September, 2010. For data analysis, descriptive and inferential statistical techniques (t-test and F-test (ANOVA)) were used. Verification of the hypothesis of equality was conducted using Levenes F-test, and normality was tested using the Shapiro-Wilk test. RESULTS: The variability expressed by the coefficient of variation was not high, since the measure was, at most, equal to 33.17. CONCLUSION: There was no statistically significant difference between variables and symptom dimensions of burnout syndrome. The syndrome may be more related to organizational factors of work than with the type of activity performed by professionals or their demographic findings.

Objective: to discuss the nursing work process in pre-hospital care and determine the prevalence of burnout and its subcategories in nurses working in mobile pre-hospital care. Method: this is a population, descriptive, exploratory, and quantitative study with 38 nurses. A structured questionnaire along with the Maslach Burnout Inventory was used in September 2010. In the data analysis, techniques of descriptive and inferential statistics (Student t test and F test (ANOVA)) were used. The check of the equality hypothesis was carried out through Levenes F test and the check of normality was performed through Shapiro-Wilk test. Results: out of the 38 respondents, 75% were aged up to 39 years, 97% were women, 57% had children, 52% had an income between 6 and 9 minimum wages, 34% do not practice physical activity, and 76% have burnout. Conclusion: the dynamics of the mobile emergency care service leads to a sickening work activity, being necessary the planning of strategies that decrease the factors of getting ill. Descriptors: burnout professional; nursing; work; prevalence; psychological stress.

ABSTRACT Objective : to identify current correlations between stress and burnout syndrome in mobile prehospital nursing care. Method : cross-sectional, population, correlational, exploratory-descriptive, and quantitative study. The instruments Maslach Burnout Inventory and Inventory of Stress Symptoms were applied, besides a subject characterization form. Descriptive and inferential statistics was employed for data analysis, obtaining absolute and percentage distributions, as well as statistical measurements. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the State University of Health Sciences of Alagoas (UNCISAL), under the Protocol 1414/10. Results : an incidence of 76.2% of burnout was identified, 32.9% with indices of stress symptoms, 34.2% with psychological symptoms, and 31.6% with physical symptoms. Strong correlation was identified between stress symptoms and emotional exhaustion, according to Pearson’s correlation coefficient and Fisher’s exact test. Conclusion : there was disagreement between the incidence of burnout and stress. Chronic occupational stress triggers emotional exhaustion, which may progress to burnout, due to ineffective coping strategies.
