Life Cycle Assessment of Membrane System for Wastewater Treatment: A Review and Further Research

Salwa Mahmood; Muhamad Zameri Mat Saman; Noordin Mohd Yusof

Membrane technology has received increasing attention for the treatment of wastewaters lately. The use of membrane system showed high demand in industries. The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) will be used to evaluate the environmental impacts of membrane system from raw materials, continues with product development and manufacturing, and finally ends when all materials are returned to earth. This paper presents a review of researchers on LCA, membrane manufacture and application to suggest corresponding further research direction. A methodology for sustainable assessment will be developed for membrane system for wastewater treatment for small and medium enterprise (SME).

Salwa Mahmood; Abdul Rahman Hemdi; Muhamad Zameri Mat Saman; M.Y. Noordin

Sustainability has become new evolution of quality and efficiency indicator for product life cycle. It is generally acknowledge that sustainability is a result from balancing the environmental, economical and social aspect. However, each aspects may expand to different type of parameters involved that cross the system boundary; qualitative and quantitative parameters. Fuzzy logic approach will be applied to deal with the data uncertainty for obtaining the sustainability assessment of hollow fiber membrane module. Fuzzy logic operation will formulate the mapping from inputs to an output. Thus, it will able for intermediate assessment between sustainable and non-sustainable hollow fiber membrane module. Hence, this paper introduces the comprehensive method for assessing sustainability as guide for hollow fiber membrane designer and manufacturer for future sustainability improvement.

Salwa Mahmood; Nur Syamimi Jiran; Muhamad Zameri Mat Saman; M.Y. Noordin

Sustainability assessment has received increasing attention in academic, industry and government over the past decades. There are varieties of sustainability assessment has been developed in difference methodology and it is application. In this paper, sustainability assessment using indicators has been introduced for hollow fiber membrane module life cycle. In addition, this paper discussing the determination of proper parameters involved in developing methodology for assessing its sustainability. In order to balancing the sustainability, 3D of sustainability aspect will be considered; environmental, economical and social.

Assessing Sustainability Performance of Polymer Processing: Case Study of Hollow Fiber Membrane

Salwa Mahmood; Nor Hazrina Jamil; Muhamad Zameri Mat Saman; M.Y. Noordin

Sustainability nowadays has become new evolution of quality and efficiency indicator for product and process. Key performance of certain product or process need to be quantified throughout it is life cycle. Polymer processing is one of the chemical processes that need attention in term of sustainability. Hence this paper presents the development of sustainability framework for assessing the sustainability performance of hollow fiber membrane module by considering the reaction of each raw material and process involved. Assessment was carried out by applying fuzzy logic approach by developing its linguistic variables and fuzzy code according the requirement. A framework to assess the sustainability performance for hollow fiber membrane processing was proposed in order to identify its sustainability score for each sustainability element; environmental, economical and social.

Development of Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis Methodology to Determine Product End-of-Life Treatment Options

Aleem Ullah; Muhamad Zameri Mat Saman; Salwa Mahmood

There are a number of different possible End-Of-Life (EOL) treatment scenarios for products at their EOL. The decision to select the best EOL scenario for a particular product, its subassemblies and individual components, depends on multiple criteria. The performance of a particular EOL option can be better against one criterion, but might not perform satisfactorily with respect to another. To overcome the problem generated by the conflicting criteria, a multi criteria decision analysis (MCDA) technique will be used. In this project MCDA is used to develop a system which aids users to determine the best EOL scenario of products by considering the user preferences and performance of competing EOL options with respect to different affecting criteria.

Review on Methodology for Life Cycle Costing of Membrane System for Wastewater Filtration

Nur Syamimi Jiran; Salwa Mahmood; Muhamad Zameri Mat Saman; M.Y. Noordin

In competitive environment, manufacturers have to come out with innovative solution to market their product including by implementing life cycle engineering concept. Life cycle costing (LCC) is one of the aspects that need to be considered when adapting this concept. In addition, costing is one of the important aspects that need to consider carefully. In order to perform LCC analysis, one of the important steps is estimating costs. Cost estimation model should not only consider pre production and production cost design, manufacturing, assembly but also post production customer use and end of life. Development of cost estimation model or methodology is needed to simplify the LCC analysis so that it able to produce result in short time and more accurate. This paper has review on LCC, cost estimation techniques and several developed cost estimation model in order to determine research gap and research direction on developing a methodology to assessing LCC of membrane system for wastewater filtration.

Sustainability Assessment of Membrane System for Wastewater Treatment: A Review and Further Research

Salwa Mahmood; Abdul Rahman Hemdi; Muhamad Zameri Mat Saman; Noordin Mohd Yusof

Membrane system for wastewater treatment process shows high demand industries that need attention in term of sustainability. In order to improve sustainability of membrane system, sustainability aspects such as environmental, economical and social aspect need to be considered. Traditionally, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is used as a tool to analyze environmental burden of product or service at every life cycle stages. This paper presents a review of researches on methodology for assessing sustainability for product development and suggests further research direction.
