The role of transport and logistics to attract foreign direct investment in the developing countries

Samir Saidi; Sami Hammami

this paper analyses the importance of transportation and logistics among the determinants of foreign direct investment. Several works treated these investments and their significance for hosting economies. But the role of transport and logistics to attract the type of investment to the developing countries is not well studied. This work is initially based on the developing Mediterranean countries for the period of 2000–2009. Using panel data framework, the fixed effect model estimated a positive and significant coefficient for transport infrastructure and logistics function, implying that foreign direct investors are sensitive to transport and logistics.

Analysis of the technological features of regional public transport companies: the Tunisian case

Ahmed Ayadi; Sami Hammami

The purpose of this paper is to assess the cost-structure of the public transport industry in Tunisia. Thus, we use a translog variable cost function to identify the firms’ technological features. In this analysis, we work on a sample of 12 Tunisian regional transport companies (RTC) over the 2000/2010 period. The main results show the critical productive situation of the urban public transport system in Tunisia. This can be exemplified by the presence of a short and long term diseconomy of scale, given that the overall factor productivity is low and almost zero.

The impact of transport and foreign direct investment on energy consumption: recent evidence from high, middle and low income countries

Samir Saidi; Rabaa Badri; Sami Hammami

This paper investigates the impact of various macroeconomic variables on energy use. Among these variables, we are interested in the specific impacts of transport and foreign direct investment in 68 countries over the period 2000-2014. In order to make the panel data analysis more homogeneous, we also investigate the interrelationships for a number of sub-panels which are constructed based on the income level of countries. In this way, we end up with three income panels; namely, high-income, middle-income and low-income panel. By applying the Generalised Method of Moments (GMM) on a dynamic panel data model, the results indicate that the energy consumption is affected positively and significantly by the freight transport in all panels. However, the impact of foreign direct investment is positive and significant for the high-income and middle-income panels. For the low-income panel, the impact is positive and insignificant. Finally, the energy use is positively correlated with economic growth, population and capital stock with different levels of significance.

Efficiency of public transport system in Tunisia: DEA-SFA approach

Ahmed Ayadi; Sami Hammami

The purpose of this paper is to study the cost efficiency of the Tunisian public transport industry, using the deterministic and stochastic method to compare the parametric approach and the non-parametric one. This analysis is conducted on the basis of 12 regional transport companies (RTC) sample over the period 2000 to 2010. The main results showed that the RTCs are economically inefficient having almost a similar magnitude whatever the estimated frontier is, considering that the classification has not significantly changed. This means that the cost efficiency of RTCs is not considerably affected by factors beyond their control.

An Econometric Study of the Impact Economic Growth, HumanCapital and Environmental Degradation on FDI Inflows in the AfricanMediterranean Countries

Mohamed Abdouli; Sami Hammami

This paper aims to examine the role of economic growth, human capital and the environment in attracting FDI inflows using the dynamic (Sys-GMM) panel data approaches for a panel of 4 African Mediterranean countries over the period 1990– 2013. Our empirical results pointed out that higher human capital attracts FDI inflows in the African Mediterranean countries. They also indicate that weak environmental regulations increase FDI inflows. On the other hand our findings demonstrated that FDI inflows in African Mediterranean countries do no react to the economic growth.

Industrial ecosystem of the territory: Strategies and perspectives

Ibtissem Sassi; Abdellatif Benabdelhafid; Sami Hammami

The globalization term has become one of the most used concept after 1990. It is frequently used in social, political, economic and environmental domains. Globalization of the economy is accompanied with increasing international trade. In the framework of our work we are interested in the economic sectors. The future of the economy in its components; industrial, trade, service and financial, is linked to the efficiency of two concepts : transport and logistics. For this reason, the concepts <;<; development of sustainable logistics >> and <;<; development of sustainable freight transport >> have become a priority of investments for the state.
