Abstract The high-speed stress-strain method of polymer impact strength evaluation possesses the advantages of standard low-speed stress-strain measurements: ultimate stress, ultimate strain and the shape of the curve are obtained, test speed can be arbitrarily controlled, and the stress is homogeneous and uniaxial. Using updated electronics, we have applied the method to a series of epoxy resins of different molecular weight between crosslinks. The results are reproducible and precise. While they agree in form with Izod results in this instance, the mode of deformation is different and disparity is found for other systems, e.g. two-phase rubber-epoxy composites.
