Mobile cloud computing (MCC) is the state of the art distributed mobile computing technology that has recently been gaining ground to augment the computational capabilities of resource-constrained mobile devices using cloud-based resources. It employs cloud-based mobile augmentation (CMA) approaches to execute resource-intensive components of mobile applications efficiently outside the device in resource-rich cloud-based computing. However, employing CMA is not a straightforward panacea and is encumbered by varied challenges, particularly long wide-area network (WAN) latency. Researchers endeavored to mitigate the impacts of this by proposing varied architectures for MCC. In this chapter, we present a comprehensive overview of MCC, and present the definition, motivation, and taxonomy of MCC building blocks, followed by a brief comparison of cloud computing and MCC. Various MCC architectures are illustrated and scrutinized. Several open challenges that require future research are also presented.
