Universal Manager: seamless management of enterprise mobile and non-mobile devices

Sandeep Adwankar; Sangita Mohan; Venu Vasudevan

Seamless management of resource constrained wireless devices along with enterprise hosts is complex because of the multitude of management protocols and architectures. An atomic and coordinated management action that spans the scale of the enterprise is needed. In this paper we present the architecture and our experiences in building a Universal Manager that manages all mobile and non-mobile devices in the enterprise. We came up with a multi-protocol gateway that blends intermittently connected mobile devices seamlessly with enterprise hosts. Our implementation of SyncML based mobile devices integrated with SNMP based enterprise manager is deployed in the enterprise and performance results are presented.

MobiMan: Bringing Scripted Agents to Wireless Terminal Management

Venu Vasudevan; Sandeep Adwankar; Nitya Narasimhan

The increasing software complexity of wireless devices and wireless data service provisioning motivates a wireless terminal management challenge. The systems management solution for this problem needs to scale up to large device populations, while being lightweight enough to be pragmatic for resource-constrained devices. The work in this paper builds upon the emerging SyncML standard for wireless terminal management in order to bring sophisticated policy-based management to large populations of wireless data devices. It is anticipated that this technology will simplify the upgrade and management of wireless data devices substantially, thus encouraging the adoption of sophisticated data terminals.

Mobile agent based pervasive systems manager for enterprise network

Sandeep Adwankar; Venu Vasudevan

Mobile wireless devices are rapidly becoming part of the personal computing with advances in the broadband wireless networks. These devices though, have serious resource constraints to perform truly complex enterprise tasks such as managing an enterprise network. A distributed adaptive systems infrastructure is needed to enable these mobile devices as extensions of the enterprise-computing platform. This paper presents a pervasive systems manager that enables mobile devices to manage mid sized enterprise networks from anywhere, anytime. Mobile agents based pervasive systems manager allows device to initiate complex customized management actions. The paper describes architecture, implementation and experimental results of management action initiation, execution and dispatch of the enterprise systems management information to mobile devices.
