Enterprise Compatible Cloud Object Storage and Synchronization Service

Sandeep Bazar; Hillel Kolodner; Eran Rom; Sandeep R. Patil

With the kind of growth that enterprises are witnessing, their enterprise data, especially the unstructured data, is growing like never before. This trend has led to an increase in the competition among various cloud storage services which are providing a wide range of options for storing data online. The access APIs offered by most cloud storage service providers are rarely in accordant with each other. Yet, sooner or later a company may need to find a new provider to store its data, e.g., if a new provider provides better service or at a cheaper cost. So, this lack of a common cloud API standard makes it difficult to move data from one service provider to another and is becoming a barrier to adoption by some customers. A common answer to this vendor lock-in lies in adapting common standards. The most promising direction for such is SNIAs Cloud Data Management Interface (CDMI), which describes the semantics of handling containers and data objects, including their metadata. In this paper we present our prototype (COSS - Cloud Object Storage and Synchronization) implementation of a CDMIcompatible enterprise Cloud Object Storage service. We also present a Synchronization service, an application that runs over the object store and explores how cloud-based clients might take advantage of it.

Accessible image file formats: the need and the way (position paper)

Sandeep R. Patil

Accessibility is one of the key checkpoints in all softwares products, applications & websites. Accessibility with digital images has always been a major challenge for the industry. Images form an integral part of certain type of documents & most of the Web 2.0 compliant websites. Audience challenged with blindness and many dyslexics only makes use of screen readers/ text readers/narrator software programs to access the computer and computer displayed information. Such audience cannot view digital images/pictures. Hence drafting accessible documents or designing accessibility enhanced websites containing digital images representing figures, diagrams, map, snaps etc is a challenges. There are various published best practices for accessibility of documents or website containing images so that they can be better understood by the visually impaired users. But these are truly not enough to cover all kind of practical scenarios and this paper positions a need for a more innovative solutions. The paper also proposes accessibility enhanced image formation technique with relevant modification required in screen readers/narrator software programs and positions its edge over the existing methods.

Methodology for Usage of Emerging Disk to Ameliorate Hybrid Storage Clouds

Sandeep R. Patil; Riyazahamad M. Shiraguppi; Bhushan P. Jain; Sasikanth Eda

With the dramatic evolution of various greener disk and memory technologies, helped in rapid establishment of Hybrid storage environment comprising of heterogeneous storage units. In order to provide an efficient and optimised storage solution there exists a necessity of adapting smarter changes in the management stack that enables compact sensing, processing, decision making capability based on the importance of data and disk life span predicted on operational workloads. This paper reviews system architecture for two faces of RAS cloud features namely disaster recovery planning, disk breakage prediction independent of disk technology and host aware data tier based on disk life span.

Optimization of disk replacement as a large domain objective function

Sandeep R. Patil; Abhinay R. Nagpal; Suyash S. Jape; Bhushan P. Jain

There are several motivations for trying to find hardware infrastructure which can be replaced. Most administrators believe in owning a diversified portfolio of disks, tapes to replace older ones, a strategy that has been widely accepted and practiced. When attempting to create an efficient portfolio of disks to be replaced there are numerous factors to consider set of fitness heuristics over a population of disks, the goal here is to find a portfolio that has a high probability of failure and at the same time will ensure savings in power consumption and carbon emission. Given the fundamental financial and price information of power consumed, cooling required, we attempt to use GA (Genetic Algorithm) and a hybrid PSO-EO (Particle Swarm Optimization) algorithm to identify disks that are likely to outperform the existing ones by preventing failure and having excess returns and compare these two approaches.

Agile Disk Replacement Strategy for Data Cloud Environment Using Evolutionary Algorithms

Sandeep R. Patil; Abhinay R. Nagpal

Information Technology has become a key differentiator for companies and plays an increasingly critical role within corporations at the same time it commands significant resources and growing respect. Across different types and size of business, the overall dependency on technology is rising. Moreover, due to recent economic turbulence IT spending has come under scrutiny and enterprises are more prudent than before to cut costs. Consequently the cut downs are not only related to macroeconomic parameters, but they influence routine activities like maintenance and hardware replacement in a more direct way. This feature is undesirable for the system administrator/investor but it is also unavoidable. The best that one can do is to try to reduce this uncertainty. Disk failure Prediction (or Forecasting) is one of the instruments in this process. However they are not pragmatic to satiate the needs of today’s enterprise. Given the fundamental financial and price information of power consumption by a particular disk along with its shelf life, we attempt to use Genetic Algorithm to identify disks which if replaced are likely to outperform and at the same time ensuring savings

Methodology for Localized and Accessible Image Formation and Elucidation

Sandeep R. Patil; Manish Katiyar

Accessibility is one of the key checkpoints in all software products, applications, and Web sites. Accessibility with digital images has always been a major challenge for the industry. Images form an integral part of certain type of documents and most Web 2.0-compliant Web sites. Individuals challenged with blindness and many dyslexics only make use of screen readers/text readers/narrator software programs to access the computer and computer-displayed information. These individuals cannot view digital images/pictures; hence, drafting accessible documents or designing accessibility-enhanced Web sites containing digital images representing figures, diagrams, or maps presents a challenge. There are various published best practices for accessibility of documents or Web sites containing images so that they can be better understood by visually impaired users. But these are truly not enough to cover all of the practical scenarios. This article discusses a need for more innovative solutions and proposes an accessibility-enhanced image-formation technique with relevant modification required in screen readers/narrator software programs that offers an improvement over the existing methods. Finally, it briefly covers the localization and internationalization aspect of the proposed accessibility-enhanced image file format so that a single image is accessible to international individuals.
